Over the long summer jet setting between music festivals, bouncing from the lush Tennessee farmlands of Bonnaroo to the metropolitan, family friendly environs of Seattle’s Bumbershoot, SPIN.com sat down with a select pool of artists backstage to discuss our special October issue on 1977, the year punk broke. Genre torchbearers such as Spoon, Cold War Kids, Bad Brains, Cribs, Motion City Soundtrack, and Black Angels took a few minutes to detail the influence of 1977’s landmark movement, as well as reveal personally pivotal albums and iconic moments from the powerful, screaming birth of punk rock — “It was a revolution, man, it was us versus them,” shot Spoon frontman Britt Daniel.
