Bodies of Water

Who? Bodies of Water was formed when husband and wife duo David and Meredith Metcalf (guitar and organ respectively) joined forces with Jesse Conklin (drums) and Kyle Gladden (bass). The Los Angeles foursome, which taught themselves how play their instruments after forming the band, recently released their debut long-player, Ears Will Pop and Eyes Will Blink, on their own 1000 Tongues imprint.

What’s the deal? As their band name might suggest, Bodies of Water makes music that specializes in being sparkling and expansive. The group, which at times can include as many as 11 musicians, pays homage to glowing gospel and classic American folk, while still retaining a decidedly indie-rock edge. Standout tracks like “We Are Co-Existors” channel the freewheeling spirit of bands like the Polyphonic Spree and Arcade Fire, while “Doves Circled the Sky” conjures up images of full-fledged Sunday School sing-alongs, complete exuberant choruses and inspirational lyrics.

Fun Fact: In addition to cutting meat at a Boston Market and writing sample S.A.T. questions, bandleader David Metcalf also worked as a proofreader for a Harry Potter trivia game.
