Rocky Votolato Sends ‘Postcards from Kentucky’

On “Postcards from Kentucky,” singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato has Jack Daniels in one hand and his heart in the other as he reminisces about past friendships and taking to the open road in search of a new beginning. Though a classic tale, the Seattle-based musician soothes an aging soul without being too cliché, too nostalgic. The lilting acoustic delivery of “Postcards from Kentucky” is just a glimpse at Votolato’s relaxed disposition — something he was just getting used to with 2006’s Makers — and with The Brag & Cuss, the former Waxwing frontman continues his road to content with ease. Even with his former punk rock roots, followers of Ryan Adams, the Pernice Brothers and Damien Jurado should find no harm in warming up to Votolato’s friendly kind of honesty. The Brag & Cuss, produced by Pedro the Lion’s Casey Foubert, will boast June 19 via Barsuk.
