Although it seems counterintuitive, as anyone who has watched music documentaries can tell you, sometimes a little behind-the-scenes turmoil can turn renew a group’s creativity. Just ask the L.A.-based alt-rock quartet, the Exies. After chart success, and stints on the road with bands like 30 Seconds to Mars, the Used, Sparta, and Evanescence, the band had changed management and labels and two members were thinking of leaving. Instead of letting the turmoil destroy the band, it seems the Exies channeled it into their music. The single “Different Than You,” from their upcoming release, A Modern Way of Living with the Truth, is a dark but cautiously hopeful journey, reflecting hard-earned wisdom amid the guitar-driven angst.
