Grinderman Wants to ‘Get It On’

Grinderman may have sprouted up as an outgrowth of his work with the Bad Seeds, but this Nick Cave-fronted quartet — featuring fellow Bad Seeds: Warren Ellis (violin/guitar), Jim Sclavunos (drums), and Martyn Casey (bass) — takes a more raw, experimental approach to songwriting, and offers fans a listen to a first: Cave as a primary guitarist. While Cave & the Bad Seeds specialize in slick, darkly sexy rumblings somewhere between the Doors and Leonard Cohen, Grinderman’s “Get It On” offers a study in contrast, with its blues bravado and loud, ragged riffs. Grinderman’s self-titled debut album cranks it via Anti-Records April 10 (Spin gave it four stars). BRIANA MOWREY
