RIAA Targets Music Theft on College Campuses

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched a new anti-piracy effort by sending letters to 13 universities, offering students suspected of illegally sharing music online the opportunity to avoid impending lawsuits by settling prior to a formal litigation being filed. The 400 settlement letters, sent on behalf of major record companies, seek to diminish the increase of music theft on college campuses. Targeted network users will be granted the ability to resolve record company claims at a discounted rate. “Online music has experienced a sea change compared to three years ago,” said RIAA CEO Mitch Bainwol in a statement. “No matter how much we adapt, though, any new business model must always necessarily rely upon a respect for property rights.”

Universities targeted include: Arizona State University, Marshall University, North Carolina State University, North Dakota State University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, Syracuse University, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of South Florida, University of Southern California, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and University of Texas at Austin.
