Officials for satellite radio companies Sirius and XM have announced their $13 billion merger as equals, which a press release described as a move to “provide consumers with enhanced content, greater choices, and accelerated technological innovation.”
But before the union becomes official, Sirius and XM — the only two companies with Federal Communications Commission licenses to provide satellite radio in the U.S. — must convince the FCC of the merger’s validity, which is currently under fire for its potential monopoly of the market. And while some listeners rejoice over the larger outlet from which to access satellite programming, like Howard Stern on Sirius and Oprah and Bob Dylan on XM, others are concerned about radiowave domination and the soaring prices that would stem from it.
