Of Montreal Play Small SF Club

Playing San Francisco’s intimate Bottom of the Hill last night, psychedlic indie popsters Of Montreal sold out the room faster than you can tell your little brother, “Actually, they’re from Georgia.” The euphoric quintet didn’t disappoint.

Lead singer Kevin Barnes looked ready for his Velvet Goldmine: The Sequel audition (decked out in Ziggy Stardust-approved makeup and a red trench dress) and opened the set with “Dis-connect the Dots.” The audience matched Barnes’ Molly Ringwald dance moves, bopping along to old favorites like “So Begins Our Alabee” and reaching a near-frenzy on Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?‘s “Gronlandic Edit.” The now-shirtless Barnes dipped a toe into the crowd in the manner of getting into a Jacuzzi before immersing himself entirely. Following a mercifully short break, the band returned to the stage for their encore, which included “Oslo in the Summertime.”

Conspicuously absent from the night’s performance: The dance anthem that’s sweeping Australian-themed restaurants across the country. As a result, one couldn’t help but notice there may have been a hint of wraith pinned to the night’s setlist. MELISSA GOLDSTEIN / PHOTOS BY CASEY FLANIGAN

We asked: In light of the fact Of Montreal licensed their song for an Outback Steakhouse spot, if you were them, who would you license their music to? COMMENT
