Rich Boy’s Snappin’, Cracklin’ “Poppin'”

You won’t catch Southern rapper Maurice Richards, better known to MC mavens as Rich Boy, cruising in his Escalade past 5 P.M. He’s still young, but the 21-year-old doesn’t have a curfew — it’s his work schedule. Crafting his tight tracks in the studio from 5 P.M. to 10 A.M., Rich Boy’s discipline pays off on the smartly sampled “Get to Poppin’.” “I wrote it in 10 minutes at 6 A.M.,” he told SPIN.com. The track, sharing space with the hit single “Throw Some D’s” on the rapper’s forthcoming debut, Product of the Hustle (out in March on Zone4/Interscope), did present at least one challenge to the bad Alabama jamma: “The beat was just so hard I was kinda confused how to rap on it.” Judging by his confident flow, it seems any confusion was quickly cleared.
