Launched this week, Gears of War, a third-person shooter video game, is one of the newest releases for Xbox, who has put forth an ambitious marketing program behind the game. The game’s television trailer teems with destruction and human carnage, and it’s soundtracked by Gary Jules’ lovely, piano-swept cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World.” While the Jules track seems like the perfect breath-holding, stand-still accompaniment for the ad, savvy YouTubers are soundtracking the video game’s trailer with songs of their choosing. Beethoven, Radiohead, and Men Without Hats, are just a few of the artists chosen by amateur filmmakers to lend their tunes to the game, and, of course, there’s tons of heavy metal (DragonForce, Megadeth, AC/DC, Metallica, among others) in between.
