There’s something Bowie, Gang of Four, and the Secret Machines about Detachment Kit, a Brooklyn-based foursome and faves of Les Savy Fav. “Heavenly Escort,” from latest release Plus, serves up distorted guitars, riffs that range from arbitrary picking to catchy hooks, and an army of anxious drums that fade from the foreground to the back. The multi-layered vocals string ethereal echoes with frantic punk chants, and smooth, falsetto harmonies with raw, neck-straining rants. The schizophrenic gem finds frontman Ian Menard “freakin’ out,” but at least sounding heavenly as he does.
