Proof Shooter Avoids Jail Time

The man charged with killing rapper Proof in April at a Detroit after-hours club was sentenced Thursday (Oct. 26) to time served and a $2,000 fine for weapons violations. Mario Etheridge, whom authorities say killed the rapper in lawful defense of his cousin, Keith Bender, was convicted last month of carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm inside a building and was sentenced on those charges. Wayne County Circuit Judge Vera Massey Jones sentenced Etheridge to time served (Etheridge spent several days in jail in April after turning himself into police) and a $2,000 fine for firing the gun indoors. Authorities have said Etheridge did in fact shoot and kill D-12 member Proof, but was acting in defense of Bender, who Proof fatally shot.
