The Knack Sue Run DMC

Members of the group the Knack, the band behind the 1979 hit “My Sharona,” have sued members of Run DMC, claiming the rap group illegally sampled the single for their 1986 track, “It’s Tricky.” The copyright-infringement suit, filed Friday (Sept. 15) in Los Angeles by attorneys representing the Knack members Doug Fieger and Berton Averre, also names “It’s Tricky” producer, Rick Rubin, as well as the group’s label, publishers, and distributors, and seeks unspecified damages and attorney’s fees, according to the AP. So why did the Knack wait 20 years to take action? The suit alleges Fieger and Averre only recently found out “It’s Tricky” used their sample. No word yet on where the songwriters were for the late 1980s.
