Showtime for Elvis Costello

The theme song for Weeds — Showtime’s dark comedy about an unemployed suburban mother who, after her husband dies, deals marijuana to maintain her lifestyle — is getting covered by heavyweights like Elvis Costello, Death Cab for Cutie, Ozomatli, Regina Spektor, and Englebert Humperdink, among others, for each episode of the season. On last night’s season premiere, Elvis Costello performed his rendition, which is now available for streaming on the series’ MySpace page. “The artists add their own personal flavor to the theme song,” Weeds‘ music supervisor Gary Calamar told SPIN.com. “Elvis [Costello] did a stripped-down version, Death Cab did theirs with a full band.” What’s up for next season? “Hopefully we’ll get U2 and Paul McCartney,” Calamar said.
