Sean Lennon Gets Cinematic on New Album

Sean Lennon’s long-awaited follow-up to 1998’s Into the Sun will be a star-studded affair with guest appearances by mom Yoko Ono, Ryan Adams, Vincent Gallo, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Ben Lee, and Handsome Boy Modeling School, among others. Why the lengthy wait between releases? “There was a long period after the first album where I felt disillusioned with the machinery of the industry,” Lennon said. “It’s not that I stopped recording, playing and performing. I did all of those things, just more discreetly. Friendly Fire…is an experiment to see what it might be like to do music more publicly again.”

While Lennon played most of the instruments on his 1998 debut, he called in a few of his pals to collaborate on this project, including Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda (piano, keyboards, and bass) and Bijou Phillips (background vocals).

Lennon has also gone fully multimedia on Friendly Fire, producing a short film for each of the album’s tracks, with cameos by Phillips, Lindsay Lohan, Asia Argento, Carrie Fisher, Devon Aoki, and Jordana Brewster. A trailer for the series finds Lennon falling asleep in a movie theater, getting in a sword fight, working at a skating rink, riding a white horse, and beating up a dancer.
