The Killers’ New Single

Just two days after leaking a 40-second clip of the debut single off their forthcoming album, the Killers have let fans listen to the track in its entirety. “When You Were Young,” the first single off Sam’s Town (October 3), the band’s follow-up to 2004’s Hot Fuss, is pulling mixed reviews from fans who are debating whether the new album will measure up to the first, or if the Killers are going to suffer from the dreaded sophomore slump. And the album title…was Sam’s Club a copyright issue?

Here’s what some listeners had to say:

“I’ve got to say, I was not sure how a ‘Bruce Springsteen-influenced’ album was going to sound from the makers of the essentially retro-new-wave Hot Fuss album, but from this clips, my hopes are up. It does sound like they’ve been listening to Born to Run a bit, but they haven’t abandoned the new-wave sound either. Actually, it sounds a little bit like an amped-up version of the Waterboys mixed with the Alarm or the Fall. If the rest of the album sounds like this and is up to this standard, it bodes well.” — Ishmael, spin.com

“Not gonna lie, I like this a lot, but then again, Born to Run is one of my all time favorite albums. Jesus, they’ve got that whole break down with the glockenspiel and everything. — Stephen, stereogum.com

“Prior to this album they were banging on about they wanted to make more of a classic rock album but this just sounds like there old stuff but not as good. That being said I only really liked the song when he’s rattling on about some bird getting her dress taken off. there’s more to music than jangling guitars people.” — yo,yo themodernage.org

“I’m so in love with when you were young!” — mrs. brandon flowers, myspace.com/thekillers
