Juno Awards Noms Pit Nickelback vs. Everyone

You can call Canadians a lot of names, but disloyal would not be one of them.

When the nominees for the 2006 Juno Awards were announced this week, the leaders of the pack were Canadian mainstays including Nickelback (who topped the list with six nods). In fact, Group of the Year reads like a laundry list of mainstream Canadian acts: Barenaked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, Our Lady Peace, Theory of a Deadman, and of course, Nickelback.

That said, a few underdog favorites got some respect, with Broken Social Scene (who were just announced as performers at the April 2 awards show) earning nods for CD/DVD Artwork Design of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year. Joining BSS in the latter category are Hot Hot Heat, Metric, Tegan & Sara, and the New Pornographers.

Arcade Fire were nominated for Songwriter of the Year for “Wake Up,” “Rebellion (Lies),” and “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out),” as well as Video of the Year for “Rebellion (Lies).”

Elsewhere, Feist (“Inside and Out”) and k-os (“Man I Used to Be”) will battle it out for Single of the Year, alongside Bedouin Soundclash, Michael Buble and, you guessed it, Nickelback. The reggae-influenced Bedouin Soundclash, who were also announced as performers, will battle SPIN.com Band of the Day acts including Silverstein and Boys Night Out for New Group of the Year.
