Shins Battle Insomnia on New Album

The Shins are gearing up to release their third album, tentatively titled Sleeping Lessons or Winching the Night Away, in the summer of 2006. The title of their forthcoming album is a reference to lead singer James Mercer’s clinical insomnia, Rolling Stone reports. Phil Ek, who has worked with Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, and Pretty Girls Make Graves, is producing the Shins’ third effort at Mercer’s home studio in Seattle. Mercer says he hasn’t written many of the lyrics yet, but the one’s he’s jotted down so far have to do with the misery of modern life. “Human life is about enjoying it,” Mercer says of his new lyrics, “and this American work ethic prevents people from really experiencing life.” The Shins’ last album, Chutes Too Narrow, came out in 2004. The band is currently on tour in Australia.
