CBGB Closing on Halloween 2006

CBGB, the legendary epicenter of the punk movement is slated to close its doors at 315 Bowery on Halloween night, 2006. CBGB has been fighting against its landlord, non-profit homeless advocacy group the Bowery Residents Committee (BRC), for over a year to stay open, and today the warring factions finally came to an agreement. “We finally got to a point where we agreed with each other,” CBGB owner Hilly Kristal told AP. BRC executive Muzzy Rosenblatt attempted to evict Kristal back in August, but after months of protests from fans and musicians alike, CBGB remained open. Kristal is scouting other locations in Lower Manhattan so that he can reopen the famed club, but he’s also considering other cities all together — including Las Vegas. It doesn’t matter to Hilly where the new CBGB pops up. “The most important thing,” Kristal said, “is we’re keeping the integrity of CBGBs. It won’t be exactly the same, but it will have the same ingredients.”
