Bleeding Through

By: Emily Zemler

In Orange County, where everything’s artificially gorgeous, Bleeding Through’s music is anything but. The Southern California sextet dress in black, hardly shy away from tattoo parlors, and make records that sound like they were tracked in the center of Hell. Fittingly, their new album, The Truth, sports grotesque cover art and a harsh opening growl: “I don’t give a fuck!” Take that, Bait Shop hipsters!

Formed in 2000, singer Brandon Schieppati, guitarists Brian Leppke and Scott Danough, bassist Ryan Wombacher, drummer Derek Youngsma, and keyboardist Marta snared a record deal with Trustkill for their second disc, the ferocious This Is Love, This Is Murderous.

Bleeding Through is probably the heaviest, most hard-hitting band to ever grace this website, but their music is far more complex than just guttural growls and speaker-shattering metallic riffs. On The Truth, “Love in Slow Motion” and the near-ballad “She’s Gone” find Schieppati opting for melody over his usual dog-like howls. And just because Schieppati often screams like he’s choking on a huge wad of food doesn’t mean that Bleeding Through are always hard on the ears. The album has its moments of sonic clarity, like when Marta’s keyboard lines infuse an extra bit of melodic intensity in the closing moments of “Tragedy of Empty Street.” It’s moments like that one when Bleeding Through really do “give a fuck.”
