Newport Folk Festival Welcomes Pixies, Bright Eyes, Elvis Costello

Kim Deal, Frank Black, and Conor Oberst will be gracing the same stage that once boasted the likes of Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez at the Newport Folk Festival, August 5-7 in Newport, Rhode Island. The Pixies are playing on Saturday, August 6, while Bright Eyes and Elvis Costello are highlights on Sunday, August 7.

The Newport Folk Festival started in 1959 in the coastal mecca of Newport, Rhode Island, but was dormant between 1971 and 1986. The festival was shut down in the 70s due to fears of rioting in the wake of the Altamont Festival debacle. Rock history was made at Newport in 1965 when Bob Dylan went electric for the first time. Ironically, the hard-rocking Pixies will reverse Dylan’s feat at this year’s fest: the raucous crew will play an acoustic set. In recent years, the Indigo Girls, Billy Bragg, Wilco, and the Violent Femmes have performed on Newport’s stage.
