Various Artists, ‘Kompakt 100′ (Kompakt)

A bunch of cork-popping remixes celebrate the 100th release from Kompakt, a Cologne-based collective that’s pretty much the only techno label that matters. The surfaces are magnesium-smooth with rusted edges, the arrangements minimalist but surprisingly melody-rich. As for rhythms, there are Ping-Pong beats, double-Dutch beats, Harlem Globetrotter beats, sputtering cell-phone beats, billowing ambient beats, and shuffling shoegazer beats, most with an un-machinelike swing. Cracker Jack surprise: A homo-robotic cover of T. Rex’s “Hot Love” with revised lyrics, including “He ain’t no bitch / But I love the way he twitch.”
