New Coldplay Album Due June 17

Capping mixing and recording efforts with production mastermind Brian Eno (U2, Talking Heads) and engineering whiz Markus Dravs (Bjork, Arcade Fire), which saw the shimmering, arena-ready Brit quartet capture the "vibrancy and colorfulness" of Barcelona's cathedrals in song, Coldplay have finally announced the release of the follow up to 2005's X & Y: The band's fourth studio album to date, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, will arrive June 17 via Capitol. Also recorded in New York and London, the new set arrives with ten tracks, including "Life in Technicolor," "Cemeteries of London," "Yes," and "Strawberry Swing." Marilyn Manson's Absinthe Wins Booze Award; Gavin Rossdale Details New Album

Despite receiving, um, less than favorable reviews from a few select foodstuff critics, Marilyn Manson's brand of absinthe, Mansinthe, has won the gold medal in the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Wait, isn't absinthe illegal in the U.S.? While wifey-poo Gwen Stefani preps a new No Doubt record, squeezes out babies, and slangs goods under the L.A.M.B. imprint, hubby Gavin Rossdale, yes, the long lost "everything zen" dreamboat behind '90s rockers Bush, has apparently developed a serious case of musical WANDERlust. As the title of Rossdale's first-ever solo offering and first release since 2005's Institute album Distort Yourself, WANDERlust, slated to arrive June 3, reflects the rocker's "overwhelming desire to get out and play music." First single "Love Remains the Same" is available digitally now.

Prince to Headline Coachella Day Two; Gnarls Barkley, Raconteurs for ACL

If the already hefty bill isn't enough motivation to slather on a thick coating of sun block and head to the California desert, here's another reason: Prince. Yes indeed, Mr. "Purple Rain" has been added to the bill and will close out Coachella's second day, Saturday April 26. In a staged, creative radio leak mashing each artist's tunes into one mix, officials for Austin, TX's other music event, Austin City Limits, have announced 29 of the 130 artists set to perform at this year's event, and already the bill is full of heavy hitters: Gnarls Barkley, the Raconteurs, Neko Care, CSS, N.E.R.D., Man Man, Okkervil River, Kate Nash, Hot Chip, Silversun Pickups, MGMT, Sharon Jones, Jamie Lidell, Octopus Project, and Del the Funky Homosapien will all perform, among others. Check back to SPIN.com April 15 when the complete ACL lineup is unveiled.

    Nik Freitas

What? Though a disciple of a path well beaten -- organic singer/songwriter wielding riffing guitars and tapping ivories -- Nik Frietas carves a niche all his own with lyrically meditative, wistful, and Americana-tinged tunes paying tribute to yet never aping touchstones likes Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and even Ben Kweller. And with Sun Down, Freitas' third record to date out May 6 via Team Love, the troubadour dives into the frequented genre's fabric and offers an album that simultaneously evokes sentiments of nostalgia and innovation, especially with the down-home drums and choogling six-string of the album's title track, and the 12-bar blues of "Sophie." Who?

Stone Temple Pilots Map Spring/Summer Tour

Who: Reunited alt-rockersStone Temple Pilots, fronted by former Velvet Revolver mouthpiece Scott Weiland, and also featuring guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Krentz. What: A 42-date spring and summer tour, slated to begin at Columbus, OH's Rock on the Range Festival May 17, and continue across North America, dropping into cities like Chicago, Las Vegas, and Hollywood, as well as festivals like Baltimore's V-Fest and Seattle's Bumbershoot. The second half of the band's tour, scheduled to continue into fall, will soon be announced. Should I go: Yes. If last night's (April 7) secret performance at Harry Houdini's former mansion in the Hollywood hills (more!) is any indication, Stone Temple Pilots are ready to kick back and roll out the hits. And as always, Scott Weiland's slithering stage antics and classic rock star appeal is worth the ticket price.
