News Roundup: Marilyn Manson, Keane, Supergrass, Arctic Monkeys

As Spin scribe Jonathan Ames experienced first hand, shock rocker Marilyn Manson's penchant for the green fairy, a.k.a. absinthe, drove him to formulate his own brand of the liquor: Mansinthe. And though the mildly hallucinogenic drink is illegal in the U.S. -- Mansinthe is produced in Switzerland -- Manson's product was tested by respected food blog Epicurious.com to very unsavory results. One tester described Mansinthe as tasting like sewage water or swamp mud, while another said the drink "smells too strong [like] rubbing alcohol." Another had an even worse experience: "Holy shit...

"Bixby Canyon Bridge" 2. "I Will Possess Your Heart" 3. "No Sunlight" 4. "Cath" 5. "Talking Bird" 6. "You Can Do Better Than Me (But I Can't Do Better Than You)" 7. "Grapevine Fires" 8. • Black Horse's Hard Rock 'Shake' Down

Marrying musical genres is a longstanding trick of the trade, and logical formula from which much of today's most interesting and listenable product was born. But with "Shake, Shake, Shake," the lead tune from Black Horse's debut, The Black Arts of Black Horse (self-released April 8), bridging the gaps has never been more refined, as the duo mix the minutiae of different yet closely related rock niches into one. Trudging out with a heavy riff and mechanical drumming reminiscent of Marilyn Manson's late '90s work, "Shake, Shake, Shake" soon settles into an industrial-esque dirge with intonations of wall-o-fuzz art-metal.

Amy Winehouse, Kanye West Sweep Grammys

Border officials may be capable of barring her entry into the country, but despite her physical absence, there was no stopping Amy Winehouse last night at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony as her 2007 breakout album Back to Black, and its notorious single "Rehab," snagged five statues and emerged as the evening's biggest winner. Winehouse, who performed quirky yet flawless renditions of "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab" via satellite from London, walked with awards for Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Pop Vocal Album, and Female Pop Vocal Performance. Spin Entertainer of the Year Kanye West, who led the pack with eight noms, won four awards, including Best Rap Album with Graduation, and offered a spot-on performance of "Stronger" alongside collaborators Daft Punk.

News Roundup: Bamboozle, UNKLE, Jenny Lewis, Yael Naim

Paramore, the Academy Is..., Cobra Starship, Aiden, Gym Class Heroes, and Simple Plan, are among the performers set to rule the stages at the 2008 installment of New Jersey's Bamboozle Festival, slated to hit East Rutherford's Meadowlands Sports Complex May 3 and 4. For the complete bill, which also includes the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Thrice, Jack's Mannequin, and Saves the Day, check out thebamboozle.com. [Via NME.com] After UNKLE's first ever tour of the U.S. this summer, oddly sans longtime collaborator Richard File, suspicion arose -- but now it's official. After ten year together, numerous albums, and numerous other collaborations, project principal James Lavelle has split with File, a decision a web post calls "mutual and amicable." "Rich will be focusing on his new band, We Fell to Earth, who are currently in the studio working on their debut album," the post explained.

News Roundup: Kanye, Winehouse, SXSW, Timbaland

Just days before the big show, officials for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards have announced a handful of additional performers to the bill, including Spin Entertainer of the Year Kanye West, an eight-time nominee, and Amy Winehouse, a six-time nominee. Oh, total babe magnet and booze-cruiser John Mayer will also perform Sunday night (Feb. 10). But oddly, left out of the press release, is news that Winehouse -- due to her, you know, issues with the crack pipe -- has been denied entry into the U.S. Thus her performance, though it may be sleekly edited in for all the viewers at home, will be broadcast via satellite from the comfort of her rehab cell, er, an undisclosed location in England. The results are in and the sheer ridiculousness of SXSW's exhaustive bill far surpasses that of CMJ -- just in case there was any confusion!

News Roundup: Amy Winehouse, Brooklyn Pool Parties, Alex Turner

Rumors regarding Amy Winehouse's involvement in the forthcoming James Bond film rage on. But now, instead of, um, pointing to Winehouse as the next Bond Girl, sources claim the Brit songbird is set for a much more apt role: singer and songwriter of the film's theme song. There's just one catch: the notoriously drug-addled, crack pipe smokin' singer must be clean by April. "That's when the Bond people make a final decision on who sings the theme," an unidentified source told U.K. rag The Sun. "If Amy is clean then, it's hers." [Via NME.com] Just as Brooklynites were mourning the loss of their beloved Pool Parties, and cautiously pondering the return of the world's biggest melting pot of piss, water, and chloride, officials for McCarren Park have announced the return of the weekly Sunday fiestas in the summer of '08!
