Grinderman Kick Off Tour with 'Ungodly Squall'

There is exactly one stage prop at a Grinderman show: a massive, all-encompassing tarp that encircles the performance space from floor to ceiling. It's not much to look at, but it says a whole lot about what's to come: If you're going to dish out dirty, trashy rock'n'roll, you'd best do it in a big-ass garbage bag. That was the only special effect required on the launch of Grinderman's North American tour last night at Toronto's way-sold-out Phoenix Concert Theatre. The ungodly squall produced by original goth-father Nick Cave and three of his fellow moonlighting Bad Seeds (guitarist/violinist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn Casey, and drummer Jim Sclavunos) was powerful enough to induce seizures, panic attacks, and hallucinations without any superfluous stimuli.

Roger Waters Kicks Off 'Wall' Tour

Pink Floyd's 1979 double-album opus The Wall is one of rock 'n' roll's great paradoxes. It's a conceptually dense, often disturbing song cycle that nonetheless yielded the British prog-rock patriarch's only No.

Pearl Jam Tour, Night 1: Toronto

Pearl Jam have a habit of handpicking various indie rock underdogs as their opening acts, like Ted Leo, who was set to open the first stop on the Seattle band's North American tour Friday night in Toronto. Sadly, weather prevented Leo from making his 7:30 P.M. set time. No worries. Pearl Jam had an excellent back-up opening band on hand: Pearl Jam. Or, rather, a coffeehouse open-mic version of Pearl Jam.
