Charmed and Dangerous
By: Stephen RebelloThe deadliest weapon in S.W.A.T. star MichelleRodriguez’s possession may not be the one in her holster, butthe one below her nose and above her chin If the casting sheet for your next movie demands a leading lady who is docile and soft-spoken, perhaps you should scratch Michelle Rodriguez from your wish list. When the 25-year-old actress found herself the lone female amid a cast of guy's guys, including Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, and LL Cool J, in this month's action-palooza S.W.A.T., she had no trouble holding her own against the jockstrap camaraderie. "When they started pulling that fraternity-hazing stuff on me," says Rodriguez, "I was like, 'Whatever-I'm used to it.' I finally said, 'You know what, guys?

The Bird on Elephant: Holly Golightly
By: Matthew WebberFor many Americans, Holly Golightly is merely a Breakfast atTiffany’s character, not a real flesh-and-bloodsinger/songwriter who dabbles in 60’s rock and soul. Ifyou’ve heard of her, it’s probably from her duet withthe White Stripes on “It’s True That We Love OneAnother,” the twee acoustic number from their latest album,Elephant. The title of Golightly's new album, Truly She Is None Other, is a bold proclamation, but her husky-yet-honeyed voice makes for a convincing argument.

Intimate Portrait: Bubba Sparxxx
By: William V. MeterBubba Sparxxx (a.k.a. Warren Mathis) fulfills the world’sneed for a big-boned, white-boy Southern rapper. As a bonus, hisname has three Xs in it, so he’s either straight-edge ortotally dirty. His new album, Deliverance, is guaranteed tomake your barn bounce. He called us from his wood-paneled bathroom. Hi Bubba, how are you? Man, I'm on the shitter. I've got an upset stomach, so don't mind any noises you hear in the background. How did you choose your nom de rap? For a while I was "Little Devil," when I was in a group called One Card Shi. "Bubba" in the South is really just a random nickname. It's a good-ole-boy name. Did you always want to be a rapper? In the South, football is like religion, and in high school I wanted to be a football player.

Bonnaroo 2003 Music Festival
By: Andrew BeaujonManchester, TennesseeJune 13-15, 2003 There are two kinds of music fans: those who are honest about what they like and those who claim to like everything. The latter were everywhere at the second annual Bonnaroo Music Festival, a jam-band event for people who claim there's no such thing as jam bands. But the thing is they're kind of right-as shrinking radio playlists and cash-strapped major labels leave more and more artists behind, more mainstream performers are following the jam movement's lead.

My Life in Music: Dashboard Confessional
Run-D.M.C. Jacko. Counting Crows? These are a few of Chris Carrabba's favorite things Lots of twentysomething punks will tell you their lives were changed by early-'90s Gilman Street legends Operation Ivy and Green Day, but how many have the guts to admit to loving Counting Crows as well? The reigning king of emo, for one. Not that Chris "Dashboard Confessional" Carrabba has always been a sucker for all things adult contemporary. "I remember liking Billy Joel's An Innocent Man as a kid," he says, "but I can't say I've found myself affected by it years later." Calling from a tour stop in Atlanta ("I think it's Atlanta") a few weeks before the release of his new album, A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar, Carrabba took a few moments to recall the albums that saved his weary soul. A. THE BEACH BOYS PET SOUNDS (CAPITOL, 1966) "My mom was a big Beach Boys fan.

I'm a die-hard Weezer fan, and since 1994-the year I fell in love with 'The Blue Album'-I wanted to get their logo around my leg. Ladies Night
By: Ross RaihalaJustin and Xtina live: The sex! The screaming! A summertime doubleheader featuring Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera sounds like the hottest tour of?1999. Still, the onetime Mouseketeers have weathered the teen-pop storm and emerged older and, if not wiser, at least skankier. This was never more apparent than at the June 8 show at Washington's Tacoma Dome. Despite her jet-black fright wig and dodgy feminist theory ("I pierce, therefore I am"), Christina (or, ahem, Xtina) won the night with her campy, vampy spectacle topped off with real live singing, while Justin made up for his thin solo material by urging the girls to scream as if they were about to plummet into the sun. Here's what else you missed. Percentage of females in 12,000-strong crowd: Somewhere around 90.

Failed Day
By: Adrienne DayIt was going to be the festival of the summer, with Radiohead,Beastie Boys, and Beck ready to rock an idyllic field on LongIsland. How did it become a million-dollar washout? By the time Radiohead launched into "Paranoid Android" at thesoggy, problem-plagued Field Day Music Festival in June, Thom Yorke's "Rain down on me" refrain was filled with bitter irony. It was as if he were venting his wrath at a staunchly non-rocking God-echoing the anger of fans who'd paid $93 a pop to sneeze through what was originally billed as alternative rock's weekend in the sun. Field Day 2003 was conceived as a two-day outdoor be-in among the pine trees of an eastern Long Island, New York, park (formerly a Grumman Aircraft site).

The Cool List
The window of opportunity has become minuscule: Some people are able to maintain their coolness only for a matter of seconds (see Vin Diesel). Gone are the days when being cool simply meant looking flashy and/or trashy; back in 1973, nobody cared that the New York Dolls couldn't play, but post-cool cats like Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love don't get a free pass in this era. And, as always, age is the ultimate coolness killer. Thirty years ago, there were five cool guys in the Rolling Stones; now there's only Keith (and even he's kinda pushing it). We realize that caring about someone's cool quotient is light years beyond shallow, but hey-this is rock'n'roll! Coolness is pretty much all we have. These 30 artists have more of that wonderstuff than anyone else. And how exactly did we decide who made the cut?
