Justin Timberlake Returning to 'SNL' to Show You Chumps How It's Done

Already in the second half of its 38th season, Saturday Night Live has subjected audiences to the unendurable comedic missteps of Adam Levine, the barefooted tub-thumping of antebellum-wavers the Lumineers, Brittany Howard's cosmos-swallowing mouthhole, and a full 90 minutes of Robo-Bieber wound up and skittering onstage to the orgiastic shrieks of teenage maniacs nationwide. But it gets better.Consummate SNL hosting professional Justin Timberlake will return to Studio 8H to host and serve as musical guest on March 9. Following Christoph Waltz's welcome reprieve from suck in last week's episode, JT will step in to host for the fifth time; his last was in 2011, when Lady Gaga performed. His lately underwhelming musical comeback notwithstanding, this will not be a bad thing.

Lana Del Rey Attends the Brit Awards Dressed as an Evil Nurse

Today in clothes-that-make-us-the-saddest news, Old Hollywood fashion plate Lana Del Rey stepped onto the 2013 Brit Awards red carpet dressed as an evil nurse. The raven-haired singer paired a belted black shirt dress with a utilitarian side braid, feathered cat eye, and black flats — which would be a totally appropriate uniform at, say, Briarcliff Mental Institution, but not so much at the U.K. equivalent to the Grammys. Her main accessory: her greasy-haired Scottish rocker boyfriend with a tongue for Pepsi Cola, Barrie-James O'Neill. Del Rey — who, let the record show, should know better because she's inked fashion endorsements with H&M and Mulberry — is up for International Female Solo Artist at this year's Brits. Last year, a still-blond Lizzy Grant graced the awards ceremony in a slinky, off-shoulder crimson gown very much in the singer's glamorous retro style.

Lana Del Rey Has a 'Burning Desire' to Sell Luxury Cars

The marketers at Jaguar have been handing out wheelbarrows full of cash, so don't knock Lana Del Rey for getting hers. The otherwise H&M spokesmodel lends her Born to Die: Paradise Edition promotional single "Burning Desire" to the sports car's 2013 F-TYPE campaign, which not only ponied up for the velvet curtain-lined performance clip above but will put out a short film soundtracked to the song and starring Homeland's Damien Lewis later this year.Reportedly filmed at the Rivoli Ballroom in South East London, the "Burning Desire" spot is a fairly straightforward affair. Del Rey takes a familiar stance behind a retro microphone as she groans, pants, and gyrates in a romantic silk sheath.

Chris Brown 'Deserves Respect,' Says Chris Brown

Just to recap: In 2009, Chris Brown beat Rihanna's face to a bloody pulp. Though for that crime, he was sentenced to community service, which, it has now come to light, he fraudulently bailed on, he commemorated the incident by tattooing it to his neck. Shortly thereafter he threw a bare-chested temper tantrum on Good Morning America. Over the summer, he got in a scuffle with Drake, reportedly concerning Rihanna, in a New York City night club. Meanwhile, he failed a drug test, violating the terms of his probation. On Halloween 2012, he and his posse dressed as Arab terrorists. In November, he started a sexist Twitter war with a female comedian. Last week, he assaulted Frank Ocean in a parking lot, and someone in his camp used a homophobic slur and threatened to kill the singer. Then, he compared himself to Jesus.

Bruno Mars Pours His Heart Out on '70s Soundstage for 'When I Was Your Man' Video

The real shame about Bruno Mars' sophomore album Unorthodox Jukebox is that it came out so late last year. By the time it hit market on December 6, we'd already nailed down our 50 Best Albums of the 2012 list, and were it not too late, this writer would've made a real case for the LP's inclusion there. (Christopher R. Weingarten would've had my back, too.) On every subsequent listen, from the libidinous pounding under "Young Girls" to the Sam Cooke-biting closer "If I Knew," Unorthodox Jukebox's retro-pop patina only wears better. That was just a long way into introducing Mars' latest video, for "When I Was Your Man." A plaintive and pretty piano ballad already, the song's visual takes an equally spare but stylized approach.

Who Let J. J. Abrams Direct Suede's 'It Starts and Ends With You' Video?

At the turn of January, eleven-years-gone (minus the reunion shows) Britpop legends Suede returned with a claustrophobic, black-and-white video for their sprawling comeback track "Barriers," from forthcoming sixth studio LP Bloodsports. Now, the second single "It Starts and Ends With You" gets a glossier but equally straightforward performance clip impaled with lens flare effects. On a hazy gray soundstage crowned by lights, Brett Anderson swings his mike and mugs in profile as a rear spotlight beams over his shoulder, casting him in semi-shadow. Repeat that cinematographic portraiture with each band member, and there's the video's concept: more lens flares than aboard J. J. Abram's Starship Enterprise. But its simplicity keeps the glammy/gloomy sound and lyrics of "It Starts and Ends With You" in laser focus.

So Maybe Beyonce Didn't Blow the Superdome's Lights Out

Those of us who witnessed Beyoncé's Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Spectacular can attest to its singular explosiveness. No, it didn't seem at all out of the ordinary that minutes after Bey launched sparks and fireworks into the air as her silhouetted effigy blazed behind her, the lights in New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome went out. The 33-minute power outage delayed the game, kept the capacity crowd — some 72,000 people strong — in the dark, and magically did what sports superstitionists dubbed a transference of energy between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Logically, it followed that the surge of metaphorical power on the stage caused the literal power to surge behind the scenes. Not so, Superdome officials took their sweet ass time to finally decree on Monday (February 4).

Vampire Weekend's New Album Is Called...

Modern Vampires of the City!Ever mysterious New York preppy-rockers Vampire Weekend at last revealed the name of their third album via a blink-and-you-missed-it ad in the New York Times classifieds section. Early Monday morning (February 4), the band tweeted "NYT classifieds..." and Pitchfork spotted the referred-to ad, which reads:MODERNVAMPIRESOF THECITYMay 7, 2013The date, of course, is when the album is released in the U.S. on XL Recordings. The band hinted at the album's title, one of the LP's last remaining unknowns, with a GIF posted to VW's official Tumblr on Friday. The image spelled out the first letter of each word, MVOTC, and we leveled some guesses that were, in the end, not too far off the mark.Vampire Weekend are scheduled to perform at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, this March, and then at Coachella in April.

  • Beyonce performs at Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show

Beyonce, Her Crotch, and Destiny's Child Shut Down Super Bowl Halftime 2013

You're forgiven forever, Beyoncé. In a thrillingly choreographed, LED-enhanced Super Bowl 2013 halftime spectacular, consummate show-woman Beyonce literally — yes, literally — shut New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome down. Minutes after wrapping a career-spanning set that reunited Destiny's Child, the stadium went dark, delaying the game. It was as if the surge of Beyoncé's supernova energy sucked all the power out of the 72,000-capacity arena. That, or the property managers did not pay their bills. Or, in disassembling the halftime show stage design, someone flicked the wrong switch. The setup was impressive, mingling video screen technology and pyrotechnics. Beyoncé first appeared in darkness as a fire-lit silhouette blazed above her.
