  • Alicia Keys sings

Beyonce Probably Should've Sung the Super Bowl National Anthem, Too

You can't help but feel for Alicia Keys, Super Bowl 2013's middle child. She'd already signed up to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before unrepentant lip-syncer Beyoncé delivered the Great Comeuppance at her Pepsi halftime press conference. She'd already signed up when Jennifer Hudson was announced to sing "America, the Beautiful" with guaranteed heartstring-tuggers the Sandy Hook Elementary choir. So by the time Keys took her seat behind the piano at New Orleans, Louisiana's Superdome, JHud had already sung the roof off with those little tearjerkers (video below), and Beyoncé, well, we all know how her national anthem turned out. Maybe it was all that pressure, maybe it was the excruciatingly paced arrangement, or that she started in too high of an octave, but let's just say Alicia's "Star-Spangled Banner" won't so proudly be hailed. Watch for yourself above.

Sign the White House Petition to Fix My Bloody Valentine's Website

So, confronted with another sad and lonely Saturday night, the Internet descended into chaos.Twitter flooded with armchair comedians' best one-liners. (The new MBV album is called 403: Access Denied!

Frank Ocean 'Forgives' Chris Brown Via Tumblr

Much digital ink has been spilled over the altercation that took place outside a Los Angeles recording studio on January 27, when Chris Brown and his posse allegedly jumped Frank Ocean for a parking space. (Competition for parking in L.A. is just that brutal sometimes.) Later, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department reportedly told the Post that Ocean sought to press charges against the oft-embattled Brown, who was already on probation following his 2009 assault of then-(and now again)-girlfriend, Rihanna. That apparently is no longer the case, according to a post on Ocean's Tumblr, which he subsequently tweeted."as a child i thought if someone jumped me it would result in me murdering or mutilating a man. but as a man i am not a killer. i’m an artist and a modern person. i’ll choose sanity. no criminal charges. no civil lawsuit. forgiveness, albeit difficult, is wisdom.

Hear Drake Set His Origin Story Straight on 'Started From the Bottom'

Drake dropped a new song earlier than expected Friday night (February 1), following reports that he would hold it for Grammys night. Under three minutes and produced by Mike Zombie "Started From the Bottom" retreads the Young Money MC's not-so-easy coming up.Sinister piano and soft, spare drum fill out the back as Drizzy lets on that his childhood wasn't all teen dramas and hip-hop bar mitzvahs. "Boys tell stories about the man / Say I never struggled, wasn't hungry, yeah, I doubt it, nigga." His delivery is flat, frustrated, a shift from the energetic, even optimistic flow on his last round of singles "Take Care" and "Make Me Proud.""Started From the Bottom" posted to SoundCloud around 8:30 p.m. EST (at press time, it had already passed 341,000 streams). A note on Drakes's Octobers Very Own Blog put the song in context:My good friends,It has truly been too long.

Vampire Weekend's Cryptic 'MVOTC' Tumblr GIF Explained (Sort of)

Vampire Weekend's LP3 looms large on the horizon, even though it still doesn't have a name. One of our 50 Albums You Gotta Hear in 2013, the band's third full-length hits the U.S. on May 7 via XL Recordings, and there's plenty else we do know about it: It may very well feature a sprawling track unofficially called "Arms," which VW debuted in Sydney in January. There's also "Unbelievers," a jaunty song premiered on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! last November. And the band exclusively told SPIN's David Bevan that this record is "from-the-gut" and features a lot of "organic sounds and a lot of performance." (Read the full in-depth interview here: In the Studio: Vampire Weekend Talk 'Instinctive' Spring 2013 Album.)LPs's final unknown (what it's called!) may soon come into focus, too.

Usher Upstaged by Willem Dafoe's Horrifying Nails in Mercedes Super Bowl Spot

In order to produce the wittiest, flashiest, most memorable commercial at the Super Bowl each year, advertisers often use a celebrity's starpower to boost a 30-second spot. Already, Hyundai has cast emphatic weirdos the Flaming Lips to soundtrack and appear in their "Epic Playdate" ad, and Volkswagen somewhat controversially partnered with reggae legend Jimmy Cliff for "Sunny Side." And now Mercedes-Benz places Grammy-winning singer Usher, Oscar-winning actor Willem Dafoe, and boner-winning model Kate Upton at the heart of its Faustian 2013 campaign, "Soul."The conceit is as classic as Robert Johnson's blues: After spotting a billboard for Mercedes-Benz' new CLA-Class, a young man (played by Sebastian Beacon) is offered a deal with the devil (Dafoe). If he agrees, he gets the car, which brings fame, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and a dance-off with Usher.

Best Coast Headed Back Into the Studio for New EP

In just 61 short seconds, Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Consentino stoked the fires of anticipation when she announced on YouTube today that she and fellow Bestie Bobb Bruno will head into the studio on February 11 to begin work on a new EP. The SPIN cover girl said the new material will be produced by her "friend Wally" — not Maybach Music member Wale, right? — in Los Angeles. That's about it for details at the moment, except that the writing for The Only Place follow-up took place in Consentino's bedroom and that she promises to keep us all posted via Instagram and Twitter. We guess that's just her deal.

Beyonce Tells World to Shove It With Mic-Dropping National Anthem

Basically, ya'll need to shut up now.At the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show press conference Thursday (January 31), Beyoncé silenced critics by singing an a cappella version of the national anthem that was as powerful and acrobatic as the backing track she was lambasted for using during President Barack Obama's second inauguration ceremony on January 21. Last week, that performance kick-started an eye-rolling faux-controversy that led to a deluge of will-she-or-won't-she headlines about whether she'll lip-sync again as the Super Bowl halftime performer on Sunday (February 3). (Frankly, we're more concerned with which A-list buddies will join her onstage: her Destiny's Child co-members? Husband Jay-Z?! Stevie Nicks?!?

Lil Wayne Wants to Eat Your Liver With 'I Am Not a Human Being II' Album Art

Lil Wayne was sprung from Rikers Island in 2010, but the Young Money head still fancies himself a modern-day serial killer. At least that's what his I Am Not a Human Being II album art conveys.Under the creative direction of Kanye West's DONDA visioneers, the cover uses, simply, the familiar open-winged red Death's-head Hawkmoth, the species recognizable for its association with the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. It's unclear why the rapper is choosing to link himself to Hannibal Lecter now; it was Eminem who name-dropped fiction's nastiest cannibal in his verse on Drake's Weezy-assisted 2009 track "Forever."And while the rapper has been known to go hard on some sizzurp, we doubt Tunechi would risk violating the terms of his probation just to break into the bath salts.I Am Not A Human Being II drops worldwide via Cash Money/Republic Records on March 26.
