Watch Albert Hammond Jr. Live at the MLB All-Star Party

Baseball may be a selective sport when it comes to honoring the greats, but at the MLB All-Star Party, thrown at NYC's Hiro Ballroom earlier this month courtesy of MLB, 2K Sports, Nintendo Wii, and Spin, everyone was an MVP -- especially Strokes guitarist-gone-solo performer Albert Hammond, Jr. Albert kicked out the jams with his ace backing band for an enthusiastic crowd, impressing equally with his power-pop songcraft and his neatly dressed style. Check out video of Hammond crooning and howling (alternately, not at the same time) through "Everyone Gets a Star," from 2006's solo debut Yours to Keep, as well as ¿Como te Llama? cuts "Miss Myrtle" and "G Up." Catch the Buzz: the New Frontiers

Who? To all of those who are waiting for Whiskeytown to get around to recording that long-promised reunion album, it's probably not going to happen. Never fear, No Depression back-issue-collectors: the New Frontiers are here to prescribe your alt-country Paxil. The Dallas-based crew, led by singer Nathan Pettijohn, produces a melodic sound that has as much grit under its boots as it does ambient atmospherics in its backdrop. Searing guitars, soaring vocals, and a winsome sense of melancholia -- in other words, perfect for road trips and rainy days alike. Their Latest: The New Frontiers' debut, Mending, is out now on the Militia Group. Recommended if you like... Ryan Adams, Wilco, the Mendoza Line Listen: "Black Lungs" (DOWNLOAD MP3)

    Catch the Buzz: cholo

Who? Like a blood red sunrise, there's something vaguely unnerving about Brooklyn, NY's cholo. Maybe it's the eerie tonal resemblance vocalist Felipe Flores bears to fellow spine-tingler (Smog); maybe it's the way that Flores and co-vocalist Rosa Bordallo harmonize in the offbeat fashion of John Doe and Exene Cervenka. It could be the out-there saxophone melodies and sharp chords that bring to mind flashes of Big Black and Naked City -- in the end, however, what's most disturbing is how cholo's deceptively catchy hooks and thorny runs get caught in your eardrums like branches in your hair. Their Latest: cholo's sophomore effort, Unlimited Nights and Weekends, is out now. Recommended if You Like... The Pixies, (Smog), X.

    Fucked Up

What? Hardcore has come a long way since Minor Threat frontman Ian McKaye was "Guilty of Being White" back in the '80s, from the harsh dub excursions of his future project Fugazi to the breakneck glam-thrash of the Blood Brothers. The latest forward-thinkers in the sneakily progressive genre are the insanely prolific (30-plus releases in the last six years!) Canadian collective Fucked Up, who concoct swirling psych odysseys within the scorched larynx of screamer Pink Eyes' wildly pitched voice.Indie powerhouse Matador -- the band's new label -- reissues last year's epic Year of the Pig EP this week, and is gearing up to drop Fucked Up's second official full-length, The Chemistry of Common Life, on Oct. 7. You can get a taste of the new record by downloading album track "No Epiphany" below for your listening pleasure. Who? Fucked Up were founded during early 2001 in Toronto.
