    Jeremy Jay

What's the Deal?Jonathan Richman once wrote, "So if you liked that, you'll love this."For example, if you like the sweet deadpan melodies of Richman, you'll love the sparse, stately heartache of Angel Town, CA's Jeremy Jay.His excellent debut, A Place Where We Could Go, was released May 20 on K Records and takes equal cues from Richman's solo output ("Hold Me In Your Arms Tonight"), '50s slow dance favorites ("The Living Dolls"), and Hunky Dory-era David Bowie (hidden track "Oh, Bright Young Things"). Jay's tunes are perfect for getting lonely, being together, and everything indefinable in between. Who?

New Cut Copy Video: "Hearts on Fire"

Karen Carpenter, the late drummer/singer of '70s soft-rockers the Carpenters, once sang about how "Rainy Days and Mondays" always got her down. And in the new music video for Cut Copy's latest single, "Hearts on Fire," the Aussies posit just how life would be if these two depressing forces combined and plagued not just the week's stepping stone, but all of its seven days. In the video, the protagonist, a.k.a. Cut Copy's Dan Whitford, attempts the motions of everyday life -- driving around, walking the dog, showering -- as a steady stream of rain follows him (and only him) wherever he goes. The results are both hilarious and sorrowful, as the wet world presented fits the thumping, echo-drenched track. Sad people need to get their groove on, too, ya know. New Ratatat MP3: "Shiller"

Ratatat have never favored the complicated; their first two records (2004's self-titled debut and its follow up, 2006's Classics) relied heavily on their tried and true formula of gliding guitar hooks and low-rent beats. Thus, it's not hard to be surprised by this cut from their soon-to-be released third effort, LP3, which represents a noticeable departure in sound. "Shiller" opens with a crashing wave of melodic static before dropping into a dripping, tinkling piano figure. Harpsichords stately enter and spaced-out synths oscillate to give the track a floating, ethereal feel. And as the volume on the main melody gets turned up, so does the atmospherics. It's a shimmering, otherworldly song that wouldn't seem too out of place on the latest record from Matmos -- try stepping to this, kids.LP3 drops July 8 on Beggars XL. Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears

What's the Deal? Don't let their name spook you: Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears may be strange fellows, but their music is meant to elicit joy, not terror. On their exquisite second effort, Flight of the Knife, which drops in record stores this week, Scary and his Tears tear through '50s teen pop conventions ("Imitation of the Sky"), stately British pop in the vein of XTC ("Venus Ambassador"), and glammed-out prog rock ("The Purple Rocket") with recklessly organized aplomb.
