BANKS Emerges From Darkness in Shadowy 'Brain' Video

Back in January, BANKS dropped "Brain," a potent R&Beats single that she brewed with the help of fellow Los Angeleno Shlohmo. Now, the up-and-coming songstress has unveiled a music video for the track, directed by Barnaby Roper. Like her previously shared clips (videos for the London EP's "Waiting Game" and "This Is What It Feels Like," and the live, acoustic "Change" session), the "Brain" short works with a dark color palette, setting a brooding, overcast mood. At different points in the mostly black-and-white visual, BANKS sings while hiding underneath a veil — at other times, she's staring the camera down as blotches of red light flash across her face. And like the smoldering song itself, the "Brain" video is at once vulnerable and intimidating.

Modest Mouse Fuel Album Hopes With Spring Tour

The lonesome, crowded west won't be so lonesome this spring. Modest Mouse have announced a new tour that will take them around the U.S. and into Canada. The curmudgeonly crew have 14 shows ahead of them, 13 of which are booked throughout the month of May. The last engagement, set for August 2, will take place at the just-announced Osheaga Music and Arts Festival in Montreal. The northwestern band canceled a string of European gigs in June of 2013 so they could focus on writing their long-awaited sixth album. As of now, details on the upcoming LP are scarce. Ex-Nirvana member Krist Novoselic revealed back in September that he plays bass on one track, saying, "It's pretty edgy. I've got my big Gibson bass and a Rat distortion pedal busting out a...

Watch Outer Minds' Striking Stop-Motion 'We Are All Stone' Video

Outer Minds' "We Are All Stone" music video has been a long time coming. The frenetic psych-rock track hails from the Chicago quintet's Behind the Mirror, a '60s-saluting LP that was released back in 2012 via FDH Records/Red Lounge Records; the song's stop-motion visual took eight months to craft, four of which were devoted to shooting with 35mm and 16mm film. Now, the clip is finally ready to be unveiled.Creators Zebulon Medearis and Andrew Barker have assembled a grimly beautiful, Tim Burton-esque underworld that's cloaked in darkness and filled with monsters (one of whom has a talent for playing the organ). Explore the terrain above, and keep an eye out for a new album from Outer Minds — they're set to unleash the follow-up to Behind the Mirror later this year.

Andre 3000 Prepped for Jimi Hendrix Role With Six-Hour Guitar Sessions

The Jimi Hendrix biopic starring André 3000 won't hit theaters until June, but the little footage we've already seen shows promise. In a clip shared earlier this month, the OutKast rapper evokes charm and humility as the late guitar god, effortlessly flirting with actress Imogen Poots, who plays model Linda Keith, the subject of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." But, really, André's charisma was never in question — his chops as a guitarist, however, inspired some healthy skepticism."The idea of anyone playing Hendrix, let alone a right-handed guitarist, was one of the greatest challenges of the project," Danny Bramson, producer for Jimi Hendrix: All By My Side, told Billboard. "We bet the house on our one and only choice, André Benjamin."To prepare for the part, André 3000 underwent grueling practice sessions, playing guitar for six hours every day.

Hear Pure X Bask in Plush Pop Pastiche on 'Heaven'

On April 1, Pure X will follow their freaky Crawling Up the Stairs album with Angel, an unapologetic pop record filled with starry-eyed swooners. The Austin foursome shared one of the LP's love songs, "Starlight," a few weeks ago, and now they've parted with another. "Heaven" maintains the sleepy pace of its predecessor, but thins out the pink fog that clouded "Starlight." This pearl draws its shine from a gently tumbling guitar twang and a level-headed mantra fit for long-hairs: "Everything we've been through was for a reason / Heaven is a feeling / One that I can believe in."Take the leap below, then pre-order Angel through Fat Possum.

Help Fund This Documentary Featuring Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan, and Shirley Manson

Between 1982 and 2010, Butch Vig's Smart Studios served as an alt-rock fortress in Madison, Wisconsin. Founded by Vig and fellow Garbage member Steve Marker, the now-defunct space was involved in the creation of many notable records, including Nirvana's Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins' Gish, Garbage's Version 2.0, and, more recently, Death Cab for Cutie's Plans and Narrow Stairs. Now, Smart Studios is the subject of a proposed documentary that's in need of funding. Director Wendy Schneider has started a Kickstarter campaign that's aiming to raise a total of $120,000 on behalf of The Smart Studios Story. To drum up interest in the doc, Schneider has shared a trailer that features appearances by Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan, Shirley Manson, and Vig himself.
