Bon Iver's S. Carey Forges His Own Path on 'Range of Light'

When Sean Carey, percussionist and backing vocalist for Bon Iver, ventures out on his own under the recording name of S. Carey, he equips himself with the following: an arsenal of instruments; a map marking the real and imaginary locations he highlights in song; and a ton of patience. Speaking to SPIN late last year, the Wisconsin singer-songwriter noted that "you can hear the patience" in his music, and he's right. Much like a campfire, Carey's second solo album, Range of Light, is a quiet, slow burn. And, much like Bon Iver's output, Range of Light delivers a set of songs with a fixed sense of place and a nostalgic sense of time.Carey has described the nine tracks found on his latest LP as being inspired by California and Arizona, where he would spend summers as a kid visiting family, hiking, camping, fishing, and engaging in other outdoorsy activities.

Nirvana's Greatest Hits: The SPIN Cover Stories

Even in death, Kurt Cobain can't escape media scrutiny. As the 20th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman's tragic suicide approaches, the fallen icon has inspired an off-putting memorial statue, a pending induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a ridiculous beer commercial, a comic book biography, and, unfortunately, a whole new level of invasion of privacy. That said, Cobain's passing can't be (and shouldn't be) ignored. So, we here at SPIN have put together our own simple tribute to the man and his music: We've rounded up some of our biggest stories on Nirvana for your reading pleasure.

The Walkmen Score 'How I Met Your Mother' Swan Song

How I Met Your Mother ended its nine-season run on March 31, finally revealing how Ted Evelyn Mosby (played by Josh Radnor) met the mother of his children, Tracy McConnell (played by Cristin Milioti). But the long-delayed meet-cute between Ted and Tracy wasn't the series finale's final twist (spoiler ahead, obviously): It was revealed in the program's last few minutes that the past nine years and 208 episodes have been building to a grand romantic gesture set to a song by the Walkmen. All right, not really. Turns out that, like many predicted/feared, the mother has been dead all along, and that all this time HIMYM has really been angling to have Ted end up with his longtime friend and often-unrequited love interest, Robin Scherbatsky (played by Cobie Smulders).

Hear BOYTOY's Sugary, '90s-Repping 'TV Dreams'

BOYTOY are a power-sharing venture led by dueling female guitarists Saara Untracht-Oakner and Glenn Van Dyke, who joined forces after their respective bands — You Can Be A Wesley and Beast Make Bomb — called it quits. On May 13, BOYTOY will issue their self-titled debut EP through PaperCup Music. The upcoming, seven-track effort features drumming from original percussionist Dylan Ramsey (who has amicably left the fold in the time since recording, replaced by current stick-man Matthew Gregory) and includes previously heard single "Shallow Town."Now, BOYTOY have unveiled yet another number from their intro EP: "TV Dreams," a guitar-pop nugget that's notable for its dynamic six-string interplay and cooed vocals. Comparisons to, say, the Breeders and Belly are likely inevitable, but also warranted.

The Horrors' Tom Furse Takes TOY's 'Conductor' to the Dance Floor

Back in December, English psych crew TOY dropped Join the Dots, an 11-track album that opened with "Conductor," an instrumental epic that spans seven minutes and melds a motorik beat with stormy washes of shoegaze. Now, the Horrors' Tom Furse has given the behemoth a dance floor-friendly makeover, beefing up the groove's low-end, adding some glitz to the veneer, and tacking an extra two minutes onto the run-time. Stream Furse's "Extrapolation Remix" of "Conductor" below, and find TOY's tour dates further down.

Owls Deal in Creepy Card Game for 'I'm Surprised...' Video

Long-quiet emo outfit Owls finally made their return this month with Two, the follow-up to their self-titled 2001 debut album. Before the LP hit iTunes, frontman Tim Kinsella and co. teased the comeback with a trailer and a pair of tracks: "I'm Surprised..." and "Ancient Stars Seed." Now, the Chicago foursome have shared an eerie music video for the former. Directed by Todd Mattei, the clip depicts a séance-like scene: Owls hide in the shadows and play their instruments, while the camera follows a mysterious card game. What's being gambled isn't clear, but judging from the decor (glasses of red wine, display fruit, a human skull), the stakes are high.

Kurt Cobain Will Be a Comic-Book Star Now, Too

Kurt Cobain is getting his very own comic book. Bluewater Productions, a publishing and production company that specializes in comics and graphic novels, will soon print a biography of the late Nirvana frontman, who tragically died at the age of 27 in April of 1994. The upcoming title — which is written and illustrated by Jayfri Hashim, and set for an April 2 release, ahead of the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death — is just the latest entry in Bluewater's "Tribute" series, a franchise that has previously covered the lives of other iconic rock stars, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison."The Tribute line of comic books tells the stories of people that have made a significant difference in the world while they were with us that," says Bluewater publisher Darren G. Davis.

Watch Janelle Monae Revive 'Idol' With 'What Is Love'

Janelle Monáe touched down on American Idol Thursday night to perform "What Is Love," her tropical-flavored contribution to the upcoming animated feature film Rio 2. As per usual, The Electric Lady delivered a show-stealing performance. (Remember, David Letterman dubbed Monáe "the hardest working woman in showbusiness" last year — and that was before the SPIN profile subject killed it on Today, Saturday Night Live, and The Arsenio Hall Show.) If Idol really is circling the drain, then Monáe successfully injected some rhythm into the reality show's death throes. Watch the performance clip above and find a trailer for Rio 2 below. The kid-centric flick, which also features Monáe in a small speaking part, lands in theaters on April 11.
