Hear Shorts' Sunny, Bummer Beauty 'Berlin 1971'

Mikael Caterer, guitarist for Brooklyn-based slacker-pop crew Scott & Charlene's Wedding, has gone solo for his own project, Shorts. On March 18, the Australian native — who also teaches kindergarten in the NYC neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant — will release Shorts' debut EP, Berlin 1971, through Aloe Music. Jimi Hendrix Estate Wins Appeal in $1.7 Million Lawsuit for Unlicensed Merchandise

In the decades since Jimi Hendrix's death, the classic rock icon's likeness and work have been revived many times over. See the embattled, André 3000-starring biopic and last year's posthumous People, Hell and Angels compilation for quick reference. But the late, great guitarist's image has also appeared on T-shirts, posters, key chains, dart boards, and other kitschy items thanks to HendrixLicensing.com, a vendor run by Andrew Pitsicalis, who is business partners with Hendrix's younger brother, Leon.

The lead single from their sophomore album, "Holding on for Life," looks to stretch 2013's glitz-and-glamour revival (see: Daft Punk, Arcade Fire) into the new year, floating a lightweight falsetto over a slow-ripple groove and air-brushing the whole vehicle with sparkling sonics." — SPIN (via iTunes)2) Les Claypool's Duo de Twang, Four Foot Shack. "After fronting alt-metal legends Primus for 30 years... Claypool has decided to form an Americana duo.

Wye Oak Ditch Guitar for Lead 'Shriek' Single 'The Tower'

Last year, SPIN visited Wye Oak in the studio while they were working on their fourth album, an LP that marks a drastic shift in the Baltimore-bred duo's sound. "There's not a lick of guitar on this whole record," singer (and, now, bassist) Jenn Wasner said inside Brooklyn's Rare Book Room Studio, seated alongside fellow member Andy Stack. "It basically inverts what we were responsible for. Andy was playing droney bass lines on keyboard. Now he's responsible for the more upper register stuff that guitar would normally handle, while I'm playing bass lines on a bass guitar."Now, Wye Oak have officially announced the upcoming effort and shared its lead single. The follow-up to 2011's Civilian is titled Shriek and set to arrive on April 29 via North Carolina super-indie label Merge Records.

Days before their May 29 appearance at Primavera, Slowdive will perform at London's the Village Underground on May 19. The upcoming gig will be the band's first in 20 years, almost exactly to the day — the last time Slowdive took the stage was on May 21, 1994, at Lee's Place in Toronto, as the group's website points out."I'm super excited," chief songwriter Neil Halstead said in a recent interview with the Quietus. "We had our first rehearsal last week, which was fun. We were surprisingly good.

  • Kate Boy, in the studio

Shadowy Swedish Trio Kate Boy Flirt With the Electro-Pop Abyss

The relationship between Kate Akhurst, Markus Dextegen, and Hampus Nordgren Hemlin began, like so many relationships before it, over a drink.Back in 2011, Akhurst — at the time, an Australian songwriter-for-hire based in London — was visiting Stockholm when she was introduced to Swedish producers/songwriters Dextegen and Hemlin by a mutual acquaintance. Pleasantries and bar conversation quickly led to a spontaneous trip to a recording studio, which resulted in "Northern Lights," a moonlit electro-pop single that generated a substantial amount of online buzz when it debuted in 2012."We weren't even a band then," Akhurst says over the phone in a Stockholm studio, remembering that first impromptu session.

Watch the Darcys' Seedy, Reno-Set 'Horses Fell' Video

Last year, the Darcys described their third album as a record about "moving forward [and] learning in motion." But the Toronto quartet's newest video, for cinematic track "Horses Fell," hones in on someone whose life has stalled. "This video follows Sonny Castille, a former Vegas lounge singer who lost everything to drug addiction," explains director Michael Maxxis. "He moved to Reno, so he could disappear. I met Sonny at a slot machine in the Sands Hotel at 2 a.m., and was moved by his story. It is a story that is presented in his eyes.

"This song was two hours in my studio. I called up Paul and said, 'Hey, man, do you want to come jam with some friends of mine?' He came over, we knocked this out in a couple of hours, and to me, that’s what rock'n'roll is all about."McCartney chimed in, adding, "He said, 'Do you want to come over and do a jam on 'Long Tall Sally?'
