Dismemberment Plan Drop Twitchy NYC Transplant Anthem 'Invisible'

The Dismemberment Plan's music is nervy and spastic, which makes it the perfect setting for a song about the anxiety of moving to New York City. Singer Travis Morrison did just that just a few years ago, leaving the D.C.

  • A$AP Ferg unleashes on Kendrick Lamar

See A$AP Ferg Skewer Kendrick Lamar on 'Control' Response

Kendrick Lamar's verse on Big Sean's "Control" — an instant classic to some, not so big of a deal to others — has engendered a number of responses, mostly from guys who took offense to the Prince of Los Angeles calling himself the King of New York. Still, most have been duds, further proving Lamar's point. But last night during a freestyle on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 radio show (itself a N.Y.C. institution), Harlem's A$AP Ferg — whose new album Trap Lord we profiled last month — issued the first "Control"-provoked threats that might actually sting.

  • Matty Healy of The 1975

The 1975 Serve Raw 'Chocolate' in Intimate Acoustic Video

The 1975's "Chocolate" began to percolate early this year, but it still reigns as one of the Manchester four-piece's best songs. The band played under a number of different names (most recently the Slowdown) before settling on a year that's quite a few decades removed from the sound they evoke. "Chocolate," along with fellow British radio hits "Sex" and "The City," crisscrosses more recent eras: the teenage vignettes of the Arctic Monkeys funneled into the polished, hooky songwriting of an early emo band like Jimmy Eat World. This acoustic version lays those influences bare, with melody placed firmly in the spotlight. The 1975's self-titled debut album will be out on September 3, but you can stream their most recent EP, IV, on Soundcloud.

  • A$AP Ferg Danny Brown Reynolds stream

A$AP Ferg and Danny Brown Go Wild for the Night on 'Reynolds'

When we visited A$AP Ferg's Bronx studio to preview his new album Trap Lord, he was meticulously recording an unnamed track, testing the elasticity of his flow and tinkering with the lyrics to a particular verse. As it turns out, that song was "Reynolds," a leftover finished in the final few days of those recording sessions. This may very well be the most classically hip-hop cut Ferg has created, and as such, it shows off his underrated writing skills. The gruff-voiced MC kicks off his verse with a short story about an, ahem, wild night partying with A$AP Rocky and Busta Rhymes. He also cracks a few cutting jokes: "Niggas think we stupid with all these designer things / And we walk in Hilfiger office to hear the ch-ching." Danny Brown slides through later for a typically snapping finale. Trap Lord is in stores tomorrow, but can be streamed now.

  • Riff Raff, Kendrick Lamar,

Riff Raff's Response to Kendrick Lamar Wasn't Actually a Response to Kendrick Lamar

Yesterday, the Internet's favorite neon goofball Riff Raff released his "response" (which you can stream below) to Kendrick Lamar's already infamous "Control" verse — or at least he said he did. Instead, as a practiced gamer of online buzz, what he actually did was throw up a song called "Ballin' Outta Control" that's been sitting around for weeks and slap it with the crucial tag "the Neon Response" while also, of course, playing into the feverish culture of Kendrick responses on Twitter. He admitted to this ruse earlier today on Twitter, because the only thing more fun than pulling a prank is getting to out yourself.None of this is exactly surprise, even putting aside Riff Raff's inclinations to troll.

  • The-Dream, Gary Clark Jr.,

The-Dream Glides Away From NSFW in Elegant 'Too Early' Video

The-Dream is once again safe for the workplace. The radio-fighting R&B mastermind's last three videos — "Pussy," "High Art," and "Turnt" — were all highly pornographic. The ace new video for his Gary Clark Jr. collaboration "Too Early," one of the best tracks off recent album IV Play, renders the song's breakup/makeup tale in soft, spectacular purples, yellows, and blues. The way to do a literal video is to make it fit for the silver screen, and directors Stephen Garnett and Damien Sandoval pull that off flawlessly here, representing quite a swing from lowbrow to highbrow for the singer. The year could still be young for The-Dream. He put in a good bit of work on Jay Z's triumphant Magna Carta Holy Grail  — which The-Dream spoke about to Revolt TV.

  • Danny Brown,

Danny Brown Echoes Usher for Squeaky Twerk Anthem 'Hand Stand'

Danny Brown wraps up a busy week of promotion for his upcoming album Old with a track that feels, well, not entirely new. The Detroit rapper has already released a whole host of new verses — including a remix of Chicago rapper SD's "New World Order" — and, most notably, has announced an October time frame for the follow-up to 2011's XXX. Last night Brown tweeted a link to a new song called "Hand Stand," produced by grime heavyweight (and Brown's "Blueberry (Pills & Cocaine)" collaborator) Darq E Freaker. The twerk-obsessed track bares a striking resemblance to two others: B.o.B.'s "Headband" and — as first pointed out by the FADER — Usher's "Dat Girl Right There," the balloon-squeaking, aborted mid-2000s single Freaker either references overtly or nicks totally.

Flying Lotus (as Captain Murphy) Leads All-Star Rap Roster on Blunted Single 'Between Villains'

Flying Lotus — both as himself and as his rap alter-ego Captain Murphy — has been a close friend and collaborator of L.A. rap whiz kid Earl Sweatshirt (who began streaming his new LP, Doris, yesterday). Earl has been on the scene for both of the big moments in FlyLo's career as Captain Murphy: Earl duels with him on "Between Friends," which was Captain Murphy's first on-mic appearance, and at the show in which FlyLo publicly revealed himself as his alter-ego. Now the two have united once again for another career mile-marker: a team-up with MF Doom, whose dizzying, stoned mumbles has been a major influence on both Earl and Captain Murphy. The track — which also features bass gymnast Thundercat — is "Between Villains," the newest joint from Adult Swim's single series.

Feds Fight African Heir Apparent Over Michael Jackson's Crystal 'Bad' Glove

America's foreign diplomacy involves an untold number of moving parts that affect the lives of billions of people around the world. Just this week the U.S. government has had to deal with the eruption of violence in Egypt, a proposed boycott of the upcoming Winter Olympics over Russia's draconian anti-gay laws, and the ongoing saga of Edward Snowden — oh, and recovering one of the Swarovski crystal gloves Michael Jackson rocked on his "Bad" tour. According to the Hollywood Reporter, federal prosecutors have been embroiled in a lawsuit with Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the son of Equatorial Guinea's dictator, in a case filed as United States of America v. One White Crystal-Covered "Bad Tour" Glove and Other Michael Jackson Memorabilia.

  • Chief Keef returns

Download Chief Keef's Punishing New Mixtape 'Bang Pt. 2'

It's been a whirlwind year for Chicago rapper Chief Keef, who turned 18 today. He has spent time in juvenile detention and been arrested multiple times for smoking pot and speeding, among other offenses. He has threatened to hit Katy Perry. He has also released a steady stream of one-off tracks, some representing his best work (and racking up millions of YouTube views) and others landing far on the wrong side of stoned unintelligibility. But he hasn't released a full-length tape until tonight: Bang Pt. 2 is here, and you can download it via LiveMixtapes. The 16-track tape features previously released songs like "Morgan Tracy" and "I Ain't Done Turnin' Up" but otherwise features a bunch of new material with the only guest spots coming from realtively unknown friends Tray Savage and Tadoe.
