Animal Collective Finally Play Merriweather Post

What a long, strange trip it's been for Animal Collective. The boys who would become Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin met more than a decade ago while growing up in the Baltimore suburbs, where they experimented with drugs and music and began conceiving the sound that would eventually make them one of the world's biggest experimental rock bands. It's been two and a half years since they released the masterful Merriweather Post Pavilion, a trippy, extravagant and widely acclaimed eighth album they named for an amphitheater in Columbia, MD., not far from where they grew up.

Dismemberment Plan Launch Reunion in D.C.

On the first night of the Dismemberment Plan's string of sold-out reunion shows, a few things had changed since the last time the band played D.C.'s Black Cat in 2007. But if the eerie glow of lit smart phones felt strange, it was comforting that the long-standing rituals of the Dismemberment Plan's live shows were well intact.

Best Moments of Virgin Mobile FreeFest

Here was the rare show where you felt alright paying $8 for a beer and $10 for a basket of fries. After all, the tickets held by nearly all of the concertgoers at Saturday's Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Columbia, MD were, well, free, which meant tons of goodwill going into the day-long event. Some of that was squandered by T.I.'s long-rumored cancellation, and by the dust clouds kicked up on the very dry grounds, and by a seating scheme that favored holders of pricey VIP tickets. By the end of the night -- and after bar-setting sets by Pavement and LCD Soundsystem -- it's safe to say most of the 40,000 fans in attendance at Merriweather Post Pavilion, which sits between Washington, DC and Baltimore, harbored no ill will.
