• White Flight, 'White Flight' (Range Life)

From the ashes of Kansas emo band the Anniversary (who recorded two increasingly experimental albums before breaking up in 2004), singer/guitarist Justin Roelofs emerges with this wonderfully bizarre solo project. Imagine early Beck, laced with heavier psychedelics, constructing a cut-up folkie/hip-hop montage with gentle acoustic guitars, hammering drum machines, winningly out-of-tune choruses, and new-wave synths. On paper it may sound like a willful, clichéd mess, but from the lovely "Song for Augustine, Pt. 2" to the dope beats of "Deathhands," it's an ADD delight. • Various Artists, 'The Harry Smith Project: The Anthology of American Folk Music Revisited' (Shout! Factory)

Screw the hipster DJs. The ultimate mix tape was the late beatnik historian Harry Smith's 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, which masterfully corralled raw country and down-home blues obscurities. That glorious chunk of Americana was honored by four recent all-star concerts featured on this two-CD, two-DVD box set. Start with the originals, but savor the dramatic, gripping covers by venerable rock emissaries Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Nick Cave, and Elvis Costello, most of which trounce the earnest tributes rendered by their over-respectful, folkier peers (Richard Thompson, the McGarrigles, Bob Neuwirth). • The Album Leaf, 'Into the Blue Again' (Sub Pop)

With the long, hot summer finally gone, we all need something to soothe our racked nerves, and one-man band Jimmy LaValle is doing his best to fill that role. On his fourth album, he gently eases you into his mostly instrumental world, where shimmering keyboards float around sweeping strings and understated beats. LaValle has toured with Sigur Rós, and his music comes off like a less foreboding version of their moody orchestral drift. | COMMENT Now Hear This: The Album Leaf - "Always for You" (Download MP3) On SPIN.com: Album Leaf Make Album, Documentary BUY: iTunesAmazon
