That's What Franz Are For
Mix together a few art-school degrees, a communal affinity for
dancing, and a run-in with the police and you might begin to get
the musical juggernaut that is Franz Ferdinand. Hyped as the
“next big thing” in their native UK press, the
part-time illegal-bar proprietors’ debut EP, Darts of
Pleasure (Domino Records), will make you want to kick up your
heels and/or snog the nearest person wearing a sweater vest and
tight trousers. After supporting Interpol and Hot Hot Heat on tour
in Europe, Franz Ferdinand made their stateside debut with three
recent shows in New York City. Before heading back to Scotland to
prepare for an upcoming tour with fellow Glaswegians Belle &
Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos, guitarist Nick
McCarthy, bassist Bob Hardy, and drummer Paul Thompson sat down
with Spin online to talk about dance music, racehorses and
the dangers of doing your own stage lighting.

Running the Marathon
Between October 22 and 25, fifty venues played host to nearly 900
bands that infiltrated New York City for CMJ's annual music
marathon. With the convergence of industry representatives, rock
journalists, eager college students, and even guest-speaker Yoko
Ono, the festival seemed like one big adult playground of club gigs
and open bars. The films and educational panels also helped shine
light on worthy underground artists, like Brooklyn’s
Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Of the countless
festivities, two concerts in particular embodied the lively spirit
of the overwhelming event, bringing new music to the attention of
the masses—and showing what can happen to a band that gets
its big break.

Nap Attack
In the midst of rising CD prices and RIAA lawsuits, Apple's iTunes
has been hailed as a ray of hope for the long-suffering music
industry. The revolutionary music store recently celebrated its 10
millionth download (at 99 cents a pop), offering a cheap and legal
alternative for music-loving technophiles since debuting in April.
However, the company's market has remained limited, since the
service did not reach the estimated 95 percent of computer users
who own PCs. As a result of the success of their Mac version,
iTunes introduced an identical Windows format this past Thursday to
the increasingly competitive business of legal downloads.
