March 13, 2012 – Billy Corgan has never been taken for a peaceful man (actually, we're reminded every few months or so he is, in fact, quite unsatisfied), so his harumphy, old-rock-guard appearances at SXSW Interactive yesterday were no surprise. In between throwing some mean names at the artists of this generation, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman made it clear that his Inner Corgan Jury was still decidedly out on "technology." First, in Samsung's Blogger Lounge, he touted the age-old argument that technology is a tool the music business hasn't quite figured out how to use yet, but has great potential to aid artists. Frequent tweeter Corgan argued social media is good for artists and claimed to have been one of the first to say so.

March 13, 2012 – A month after announcing its initial lineup, Bonnaroo has added a handful of fresh acts to its bill (via Consequence of Sound). The caravan heading down to Tennessee June 7-10 will also include Maynard James Keenan-fronted Puscifer, the highly synchable fun., the highly mashuppable Santigold, the Temper Trap, and the Cave Singers. Glenn Danzig is also slated to perform a "legacy" set, which is supposed to include Misfits/Samhain/solo Danzig material, but after last year's Fun Fun Fun madness, we'll believe it when we see it. Maybe he sees 'Roo as a place of redemption — but only if the bands there tip their caps to the Misfits. This year's Bonnaroo will be headlined by Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, and Skrillex.

March 12, 2012 – The-Dream made his first New York appearance in more than a year last night at S.O.B.'s, and as expected, the show was filled with screaming females (no, not that kind) — ladies who loved his slick vocals almost as much as they adored tweeting about Jay-Z and Beyoncé's appearance in VIP to support the guy who co-wrote Bey's Grammy-winning "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)." But Dream's show wasn't all about lady love — in one noteworthy moment he took aim at his fellow R&B smoothies without naming names, exactly. "I haven't done a show in close to two years," the hitmaking R&B singer/songwriter, née Terius Nash, told his sold-out audience, in between performances of the never-before-performed "Fancy"/"Right Side of My Brain," the Christina Milian-inspired "Used to Be," and copious bring-ladies-from-the-crowd-onstage serenades.

March 12, 2012 – Because you might have forgotten for one eensy weensy second that Foo Fighters recorded their Grammy-winning (and SPIN-beloved) Wasting Light totally analog in Dave Grohl's quite large garage, the band is back with an extra old-timey treat for fans — a stream of their 1995 performance at the U.K.'s Reading Festival skinned as a cute little virtual cassette tape player. (Not sure what that is? It's okay, just click on the little "PLAY/LOAD" button and Google it later.) The free surprise, which actually kind of looks like a site build the same year the set was recorded, follows the Foos' ranking last week at No. 31 on Billboard's annual Money Makers list.

March 12, 2012 – Kyuss Lives! may not be able to live up to their name much longer. Josh Homme and Scott Reeder have filed a lawsuit against their former Kyuss bandmates, vocalist John Garcia and drummer Brant Bjork, for using the early '90s Palm Desert stoner-rock outfit's name. According to a statement released by Reeder and Homme, the pair had started talks with the rest of the ex-Kyuss crew in January to negotiate terms of Garcia and Bjork's use of the name, but found out recently that all four musicians weren't on the same page. The duo are suing for trademark infringement and consumer fraud. "It sucks," Homme and Reeder say in a statement. "With open arms, we made every attempt to help them continue Kyuss Lives! respectfully. Only to discover while they looked us in the eye, Kyuss Lives! management and band had filed federal documents in 2011 in an attempt to steal the name Kyuss.

March 12, 2012 – In October, '70s soul man Syl Johnson filed a lawsuit against Jay-Z, Kanye West, and their labels arguing the two sampled his song "Different Strokes" for "The Joy" (a bonus track on last year's Watch the Throne) without permission. Johnson said Kanye had tried to get the song cleared for a track on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but couldn't seal the deal in time for release. (This problem didn't stop Tyga.) According to TMZ, legal papers were filed last week in Illinois federal court that stated Jay and 'Ye had settled out of court with Johnson for an undisclosed amount, proving that, at least when you're as rich as Hov and Yeezy, it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

March 9, 2012 – And the rappers keep rolling out: Following similar announcements from Jay-Z and 50 Cent, Lil Wayne has announced that he, too, will be gracing the fine folk in Austin, Texas, next week via Mountain Dew, with whom he just signed a massive branding deal. Weezy will be going south to make myriad announcements about the campaign, DEWeezy, which includes the forthcoming construction of a skate park in New Orleans. He hasn't announced any live performances during the fest yet, but considering we all know what happened with Kanye and VEVO last year... What we do know, however, is that since being released from prison in 2010, Tunechi has kicked drinking and drugs and has been known to chill with the local grind punks at skate parks (like this regular kid, for example).

March 9, 2012 – Sometimes it's nice to think about professional musicians as dedicated artistes regaling us with their melodies for the sheer joy of musical performance. Then the illusion-crushing annual Billboard Money Makers list drops and fans everywhere get to see how filthy rich even the most adorable of their favorite artists really are. This year, based on the amount of money made in 2011, the award for least Occupy Wall Street-friendly musician goes to... Taylor Swift! (She's shocked, trust us.) The ever-unsuspecting songsmith pulled in over $35.7 million this year, according to Billboard's calculations, which combine Boxscore numbers (data on tour profits) and album, single, and digital sales from U.S. sources. That, according to Billboard, is a whopping 17 percent more than the top-earning artist of 2010 made, Lady Gaga with $30.5 million.
