February 28, 2012 – Frank Ocean shared bummer news with his Tumblr following today. Don Henley — the Eagles frontman and co-writer of the song "Hotel California," which Ocean reinvented on his lauded 2011 album Nostalgia, Ultra as "American Wedding" — has done what we all expected since the second Ocean dropped the album: He threatened to sic his lawyers on the R&B hotshot should he croon "Wedding" ever again. "Don henley [sic] is apparently intimidated by my rendition of Hotel California," Ocean writes. "He threatened to sue if I perform it again. I think that’s fuckin awesome." Why is this such a bummer? "Wedding" has given "Hotel" an entirely new context. A whole new demographic has learned about the Eagles' hit (assuming these kids have never been to the dentist, where "Hotel California" plays on an endless loop on lite-FM stations worldwide).

February 28, 2012 – Erykah Badu arrived in Malaysia for a concert in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow... and was then promptly informed that the government of the predominantly Muslim nation had cancelled her show. The reason for the abrupt shut-down? Turns out Malaysian officials, despite their notorious efforts to censor it, use the Internet, where they discovered the above press photo of Badu, who sports (temporary, in all likelihood) tattoos. The tat of the Arabic word for Allah, among other religious symbols, was deemed objectionable.

February 28, 2012 – Kid Cudi and Dot Da Genius' rock'n'roll album WZRD drops today, and the duo told the stories behind the disc to Complex, where Cudi talked what it was like writing love songs, which new up-and-comers he's digging (A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q), learning to play guitar and bass, and sharing the rapper-turned-rocker arena with Lil Wayne. Per Cudi, "These songs are more bright and positive," in contrast to his previous, more weepy material. "I played [one] for my sister, and she didn't even know it was me." Despite all the warm-and-fuzziness, however, "Mr. Rager" couldn't help but let some of his well-known angst shine at the New York listening party for the record. As HipHopWired points out, there's no way this event didn't have an open bar, so naturally, buzzed attendees began carrying on side conversations when a Q&A segment began. Cudi was not pleased.

February 28, 2012 – Tragic news: It turns out Jay-Z wasn't possessed by muses and inspired to write celebratory baby-daddy tune "Glory" the second his daughter Blue Ivy Carter entered the world. The song's producer (and Oscar balcony drummer) Pharrell Williams shattered our fantasies yesterday of an overjoyed Hova bursting into spontaneous song like a Glee character upon the arrival of his daughter. Apparently, he and Jay had been working on the song before her birth. (If a newborn were ever to inspire instant songcraft, however, that emo-haired child would be the one.) "[Jay-Z and Beyoncé], they live a different lifestyle, and it was important for him to stop everything that he had going on and just sort of make statement to his baby and his wife," Pharrell told MTV News at the Oscars (via HipHopDX).

February 27, 2012 – Courtney Love is not the only member of Hole who has plenty to say about the loss of Kurt Cobain. Onetime Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson has announced plans to publish a 52-chapter book comprised of "prose, poetry, and free association" that explores "rock ‘n’ roll, drug abuse, and the loss of Cobain," according to the New York Times. It arrives on April 8 (via Akashic Books), three days after the 18th anniversary of Cobain's death. Erlandson told the Times he'd started to write a straightforward memoir, then ditched it in favor of this more free-form effort. How free-form? "There's one piece that it seems like it’s all about [Courtney], but then when I read it back I go, 'Oh, I'm talking about my mom.' " Okay, then! As of 1 p.m. today, when the Times published their story online, Erlandson was still not on good terms with his former bandmate, irresponsible pet owner Love.

February 27, 2012 – John Lydon is making it abundantly clear of late that he's ready to start making gobs of money off the never-ending reunion trend. The former Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols announced that the seminal band has signed a catalog deal with the U.K.'s branch of Universal to reissue their old material. According to Billboard, all that's slated for release so far are a repackaged, expanded edition of 1977's Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols and their 1980 mockumentary soundtrack The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

February 27, 2012 – After making itself known in Dallas, Colorado, Orlando, and even Puerto Rico, the fast-growing glowstick-a-thon Electric Daisy Carnival is finally making a pitstop in New York before heading to its now-native Las Vegas this year. Billboard reports that the fest will hit the East Coast May 19-20, three weeks before its annual Vegas iteration June 8-10. It's a joint project courtesy of the fest's organizer Insomniac Events and Pacha New York, the NYC nightclub owned by the international Spanish nightlife franchise by the same name. The event's website hints that an announcement from EDC Puerto Rico is also on the horizon.

February 27, 2012 – The 84th Annual Academy Awards was an unusually odd night for music, as both wins and appearances came via the most unexpected avenues. Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie took home Best Song for The Muppets' "Man or Muppet," besting only Rio's "Real in Rio" in a category where 39 other songs were eligible for nomination but only two made the ballot. In what can only be described as a "double sad," neither the winning song nor its competitor were performed at the awards show, as they've been in the past. Iinstead, we got this questionably relevant, nostalgia-heavy, Hans Zimmer-scored performance from Cirque du Soleil. Did we mention Zimmer wasn't even nominated this year? The Artist composer Ludovic Bource won for Best Score, and — surprise!

February 24, 2012 – John Peel collected over 25,000 LPs and 40,000 singles in his four-decade career as BBC Radio 1's new music guru — that's over 65,000 slabs of vinyl. And don't even get us started on how many CDs were in his collection, because honestly, there are probably too many to count. Now, however, the late (and last) DJ's entire stash is going to be archived online for all of us to peruse and imagine what über-tastemaking in the 1960s and '70s must have been like for the man who did it, arguably, best. Says the BBC (via Rolling Stone), the collection will be included in the British Arts Council's new project, the Space, thanks to cooperation with the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, a Suffolk-based community project and art space patroned by Peel's widow Sheila.

February 24, 2012 – Screaming Females have always struck us as cat people. Yesterday, though, the trio dropped quite the video for "It All Means Nothing," the first single off their forthcoming Albini-produced album Ugly, and now, we're having second thoughts — second, very dark thoughts. The clip, directed by Ken Castellano and probably filmed in one of the trio's houses in Jersey, begins innocently enough, Jarrett and Mike (drummer and bassist, respectively) having a casual chat, petting their three cats occasionally as the felines roam the apartment, eating the plants and doing similarly passive aggressive cat things. Everything is fluffy and happy and cute, as is the custom in cat videos. However, about a minute into the clip, frontwoman Marissa Paternoster comes home, and the shit hits the fan, in the worst way.
