Sludgemasters Yob To Delight, Confound on Tool's Winter Tour

Fresh after appearing on SPIN's top 50 albums of 2011 and garnering the distinction of our second-favorite metal album of the year, atmospheric, skull-caving sludge monsters Yob are preparing to set off on a tour with prog-metal titans Tool in 2012. The always brave and industry-defying Tool has a long, awesome history of bringing only the boldest, brightest alterna-metal heroes out on tour with them — past roadmates include the Melvins, Fantômas, Isis, Kinski, Russian Circles, and noise-hop titans Dälek. While SPIN is always ecstatic about these choices, these bands often, notoriously, come up against a swift rounds of boos from the audience.

One Fucked Up Year: SPIN's Best of 2011 Issue

Kim and Thurston broke up, Lulu happened, and somewhere in between everybody got pepper-sprayed: 2011 has been a fucked up year all around, but SPIN is proud to at least end it all on a Fucked Up high note. The cover of our January/February issue features the contorted mug of Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham and a blurred out swear word because Fucked Up's 78-minute hardcore opera David Comes to Life is SPIN's Album of the Year! It perfectly matched our love-during-tumult moods and, you know, it's pretty much the gnashing, barking antidote to Foster the People.

Download Cloud Nothings' Punkiest New Song 'Stay Useless'

Cleveland lo-fi menace Cloud Nothings have returned with the second taste of their upcoming sophomore album Attack on Memory, due January 24 on the usually bliptacular Carpark Records. We already heard "No Future, No Past," maybe the most Albini thing Albini has produced this decade. And today they bless us with the album's shortest track, the upbeat and still-sorta-brooding "Stay Useless," a rollicking vintage jam that sounds like some weird mixtape pile-up of Psychedelic Furs, Dead Milkmen, and Archers of Loaf. It's so much retromania that Yuck better duck! DOWNLOAD

'I Want My MTV' Authors Pick 1991's 10 Best Videos

Nineteen-ninety-one was maybe the most chaotically diverse year in MTV's history, the real story being that that multiple stories were being shouted simultaneously. Despite the myth that grunge killed hair metal, the shiny suits and elaborate sets of Nelson's "After the Rain" sidled up next to the rusty monochrome minimalism of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Guns N' Roses were trashing cars for "Don't Cry" and Extreme didn't need "More Than Words." More than ever before, MTV's pop playlist was being crashed by hip-hop (via Naughty by Nature), metal (via Metallica) and "Rico Suve" (via Gerardo). Madonna, Chris Isaak, Marky Mark, Public Enemy and the Chili Peppers made black-and-white videos cool again — though Hammer was still blowing bazllions to dance with the Addams Family.

Henology: SPIN Test Drives ?uestlove's New Chicken Drumstick

Though his mighty Roots crew just released an especially complex concept album, drummer ?uestlove premiered his tastiest work yet at New York's legendary Blue Note last night: Love's Drumstick, an origami-wrapped buttermilk chicken drumstick served in a Bento Box. It was all part of "?uestlove Eats... A Night of Food and Music," the first event for his new catering service?uest Loves Food. Serving up Korean and Creole-inspired comfort grub with locally sourced ingredients, ?uest Loves Food promises a buttermilk chicken food truck in New York's near future and servicing at "high-profile, exclusive events" like the night's $80-a-head three-course dinner concert starring ?uest, Bobby McFerrin, Rahzel, Black Thought and Brass Heaven.

Listen to 'Jeeper Creeper' From Yeasayer Side Project Sinkane

Multi-instrumentalist Ahmed Gallab has had his hands on more indie rock bands than Mountain Dew. You may recognize him onstage in bands like of Montreal, Caribou, Born Ruffians, or currently as a fulltime member of Yeasayer, a band diligently working on an album of demented R&B. His solo project Sinkane is all set to release its fourth album, Mars, and SPIN has the first taste, "Jeeper Creeper." Fans of Yeasayer certainly won't be disappointed in its Afrobeat-inflected rhythms, chilltastic wooshwave, and gallons upon gallons of reverb.
