  • Talking Heads Unreleased Theme Song 1976 CBGBs

Hear Talking Heads' Unreleased 'Theme' Song, Recorded in 1976

In the summer of 1976, the Talking Heads were only a year past their first show (opening for the Ramones) and a year away from their first album, 77. On July 30, David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, and Chris Frantz played two sets alongside Television at New York City's iconic CBGB, and thankfully someone was there to record it. Because now, nearly 38 years later, we can finally hear a never-released instrumental from that night informally dubbed "Theme." The five-minute song opens with ominous guitar and soon spreads out, finding a sun-dappled beachy groove before culminating in a noisy finish. In the beginning, Byrne introduces the song. "No title?" a fan asks, and he responds, "We call it 'Theme,' but then we just keep it to ourselves." Stream "Theme" below thanks to a Dutch Talking Heads fan site (and Slicing Up Eyeballs).

  • Run Jewels Killer Mike El-P Pew Q-Bert Stream

Run the Jewels and DJ Qbert Pop Shots on Bleak-Banging 'Pew Pew Pew'

Killer Mike and El-P ran the indie-rap game in 2012 with a pair of cross-pollinated solo albums, and then ran it all over again in 2013 as a proper due with Run the Jewels. Their self-titled debut LP ranked high in SPIN's Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2013, but fans abroad will technically be able to add Run the Jewels to their 2014 list — an expanded U.K. version arrives on January 13 via Ninja Tune's rap-oriented Big Dada imprint. We've already heard TV on the Radio founder Dave Sitek's "Sea Legs" remix, and now we get a brand new track, streaming below. "Pew Pew Pew" features the maniacal scratch tactics of the legendary DJ Qbert and finds our two hosts spitting rapid-fire acerbic brags over bleak break-beats. In other words, it's RTJ gold. Much like their holiday offering "A Christmas Fucking Miracle."

  • Britney Spears I Am Jean Documentary Ratings Vegas

Britney Spears' 'I Am Britney Jean' Vegas Doc Is a Ratings Flop

Despite Britney Spears' attempt to release an album this month — Britney Jean has had a rough go with critics and fans alike — the real excitement surrounding the Y2K-pop star has to do with her forthcoming Las Vegas residency. The Planet Hollywood production, Piece of Me, kicks off Friday, December 27, and runs deep into 2015. So on Sunday night, December 22, E! broadcast a two-hour behind-the-scenes documentary on the thing ... and it flopped pretty awfully. The special broadcast raised a mere 706,000 viewers. Now, you may be thinking, "Hey, it's the Sunday before Christmas. People are probably ... on airplanes or, um, in church or something." Not so. For comparison, ABC's airing of the 1965 classic musical The Sound of Music averaged 6.6 million viewers according to Nielsen (via USA Today). Oh, and Sunday Night Football nabbed 18.3 million.

  • Beyonce Billboard Charts Top 10 Garth Brooks Album

Beyonce Is No. 1 Again, Sells Circles Around Last Album

First! Who else but the Queen Bey? We knew it was coming — Beyoncé scored a No. 1 victory when she sneak-released Beyoncé at the tail end of that particular sales week, which only amounted to three days. Her fifth album had a few numbers-bumps built into its second week: 1) seven full days of selling, 2) good buzz going into the Christmas holiday, and 3) the album's arrival in CD form, which had been put off to allow iTunes exclusivity initially. Experts predicted Mrs. Carter's latest would do around 260,000 in week two — instead, it did 374K, according to Billboard. That's bigger than the first week of the megastar's 2011 album 4, and it brings the total for Beyoncé up to 991K. It'll undoubtedly break a million in 2013. Though not with Target's help.2 to 10: Otherwise, baby it's old outside. The rest of the top 10 is pretty damned stale.

  • Rap Genius Google Link Scheme Penalized SEO

Google Punishes Rap Genius for Using Search Hack

Rap Genius is bad at making friends. In November the National Music Publishers Association called the site "blatantly illegal" because they never actually obtained the licenses required to display lyrics. And though they seem to be making strides toward legitimacy in that department (Rap Genius and Sony struck a deal), they've now pissed off Google for allegedly participating in a link scheme. The Internet giant is now punitively burying the lyrics site beneath pages of undesired search results.Blogger John Marbach exposed the problem on December 23 after RG posted this to Facebook: "Do you have a blog? Do you wanna be a RAP GENIUS BLOG AFFILIATE? Help us help you!" That was followed by an email address for co-founder Mahbod Moghadam.

  • Nirvana Day Washington April 10 Hoquiam Hall Fame

Nirvana Day Declared in Washington Town

On April 10 Nirvana will be at last inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that's not the only honor the northwestern alternative giants will receive. That date has officially been declared Nirvana Day by the small city of Hoquiam, Washington, located in the same county as Kurt Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, just four miles to the east. The band's legendary late leader also lived in the 8,500-population burg for a short while.According to local radio station KXRO, Hoqiuam mayor Jack Durney shared some words to mark the occasion: "They bring great honor, I think as I say, to our entire community.

  • Yuck 'Somewhere' Video Glow Behold

Yuck Take to the Sky in 'Somewhere' Video

Yuck blessed us earlier this month with a super adorable video for "Lose My Breath," in which children and ducklings shared an innocent day at the pool — well, it started that way, at least. Now we get an ambient clip (sans narrative) for the beautiful six-minute drifter "Somewhere." That Glow & Behold highlight features slowly billowing guitars and subtly uplifting vocals, so it's appropriate that the accompanying clip takes place in an airport and up amongst the clouds. For more from Yuck, revisit the band's shoegaze-dusted "Rebirth," and their Elliott Smith-like "Memorial Fields."

Barack Obama Agrees: 'Kanye's Music Is Outstanding Though'

We got a lot of Kanye West in 2013. The man released a bona fide stunner of a new record, Yeezus, which was SPIN's Album of the Year. That placed him at the top of our Best Albums list and our Best Hip-Hop Albums list, of course. The dude also had a lot to say this year, which led to a notable inclusion in our Year in Quotes round-up and spawned a standalone gallery of original illustrations depicting the many self-comparisons West made in various rants and interviews. But the year wouldn't be a wrap if we didn't get the President of the United States of America himself to weigh in Yeezy. In a new interview with People, via Politico, Barack Obama is asked who he'd rather hang out with: the Duck Dynasty family or West and his fiancé Kim Kardashian.
