  • Jon Stewart City Gardens Bartender New Jersey X

Jon Stewart Was Literally Left Holding the Gun at an X Gig

America's most trusted newsman spent four years tending bar at one of the grungiest and most inspired punk clubs in the nation, and now he's talking about it. In an interview with Vulture, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart fondly recalls some of his grittier memories from his stint (1984 to 1987) serving booze at Trenton, New Jersey's City Gardens, a revered shithole that played host to the Ramones and Nirvana, and which will soon be immortalized in a book and a film. It's hard to pick the single greatest anecdote from the conversation, but the time he wound up holding someone else's gun during a brawl at an X show is a strong contender: "There was an off-duty cop there [and] there was a bit of a disagreement between this gentleman and two other people who felt that his face should be hit by their fists.

  • Jezabels 'Psychotherapy' (Aaron Harris Remix) Stream

Palms' Aaron Harris Remixes the Jezabels 'Psychotherapy'

Sydney quartet the Jezabels specialize in a richly textured sort of rock/pop that blurs the lines between acoustic and electronic, atmospheric and active. Lead singer Hayley Mary is a force unto herself, with a warm voice that sails across the songs on The Brink, the group's new album. And now a song from that set, the lush "Psychotherapy," gets a remix from an unlikely source — Aaron Harris, best known as the drummer for Isis and Palms, but also a part-time producer and touring engineer for a handful of bands, including the Jezabels.

  • Alsarah & The Nubatones 'Soukura' EP Stream Remix

Stream Alsarah & the Nubatones' Vibrant 'Soukura' EP

Sudanese-born, Yemen-raised, Brooklyn-based Alsarah has been dubbed "the new star of Nubian pop" and one listen to her forthcoming Soukura EP more than justifies the designation. The singer, songwriter, and ethnomusicologist has a knack for creating songs that are the result of both study and experience, which encompass ancient ideas and brand-new sounds, that feel effortless although they require a great deal of skill to make. Her February 25 short-player not only captures the sound of Alsarah's incredible band, the Nubatones, it includes remixes from others in the Wonderwheel Recordings stable: African house artist Boddhi Satva, dub dude the Spy From Cairo, and Giant Step producer/DJ Nickodemus.

  • Conor Oberst Rape Defamation Lawsuit Joanie Faircloth

Conor Oberst Sues Woman Who Claims He Raped Her

This year got off to a very sobering start for Conor Oberst. In January he was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl by an anonymous netizen who said she'd kept the information secret for years. Now, the Bright Eyes founder is taking legal action to protect his name, suing a woman named Joanie Faircloth for defamation to the tune of more than a million dollars, says TMZ.In the comments section of an XOJane article, Faircloth had claimed Oberst assaulted her a decade ago after a North Carolina concert. She'd said his older brother was her English teacher and that he'd introduced her to one of her favorite musicians as a 16th birthday gift. But according to her, Oberst came onto her backstage and forced himself on her after she turned him down."Conor took a lot from me including my virginity, my dignity, and self-esteem," Faircloth wrote.

  • Actress 'Miami Retirement Condo' Stream Download Free

Actress Offers 'Miami Retirement Condo' as Free 'Ghettoville' B-Side

Actress' new Ghettoville album is, as Philip Sherburne put it, a spectacularly icy riot of grouchy, grimy outsider dance music. It also may very well turn out to be Darren Cunningham's final album under the alias, so we're thankful for all of the extras we can get. Following up the sensuality-warping "Rap" stream and his eerie black-label single "Grey Over Blue," the London producer now shares an unreleased cut called "Miami Retirement Condo." The moody and minimal track weaves through a strange soundscape of broken beats, disembodied voices, and snaking synths. Download the song for free via Sendspace, or stream it below.

The Wytches Aren't Scared of the Dark in 'Gravedweller' Video

A week ago the Wytches took us by storm with "Wire Frame Mattress," a heavy-meets-catchy collision of Black Sabbath sonics, Jack White weirdness, and Dick Dale wilding. They've followed that up with a brand new video for "Gravedweller," another surf-sludge win that finds Kristian Bell wailing about darkness and death while bassist Dan Rumsey, and drummer Gianni Honey do their thing. The Hoodbats-directed clip is public access television meets Blair Witch Project. Download "Gravedweller" and two B-sides for free using the widget below. Expect an album on Partisan in May.

  • Warner Music Group Shazam Label Spy Sign Artists

Warner Music Will Use Shazam to Spy on Us Now

Shazam will no longer be the friendly little helper app we've all come to rely upon in moments of face-palming forgetfulness or new-music discovery. It will still identify songs in the same manner that it always has, but thanks to a new partnership with Warner Music Group, the program will be studying our interest and habits in order to figure out which emerging artists it should sign. Yes, the world's first robotic record label has been born.Warner is launching a Shazam-branded label "that will identify unsigned artists by combining traditional A&R with the music ID app's massive fan activity data." And of course, "The partnership will also market existing WMG artists." That last part has already begun — Chromeo's video for "Come Alive" and Wiz Khalifa's "We Dem Boyz" single were premiered/unlocked using Shazam.

  • Arctic Monkeys Brit Awards 2014 Acceptance Speech

See Alex Turner's Mic-Dropping Album of the Year Acceptance Speech at the 2014 BRIT Awards

Arctic Monkeys picked up their fourth Best British Group and third Best British Album at the BRIT Awards on Wednesday, and singer Alex Turner marked the occasion with a memorable speech and a bona fide mic drop. After picking up the night's biggest honor for their September set AM, the 28-year-old SPIN Interview subject waxed poetic on one of his known favorite subjects:"That rock'n'roll, ay? That rock'n'roll, it just won't go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that it acquiesce to some of its rules. But it's always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock'n'roll, it seems like it's faded away sometimes, but it will never die.
