  • Justin Timberlake 20/20 Experience Haim Lorde Billboard Chart

Who Charted? Justin Timberlake and Haim Trade Shots Over the Atlantic

First! Justin Timberlake is back a mere 28 weeks after his return album The 20/20 Experience scored the year's biggest No. 1 to date. While that platter did nearly a million (968,000, if we're picking nits), its surprise sequel The 20/20 Experience (2 of 2) starts at 350K, according to Nielsen SoundScan via Billboard. The drop-off was to be expected, of course, and the stats are plenty impressive. JT is only the 20th artist in chart history to nab two No. 1s in a 12-month span, and the first to do it with two different studio albums since, um, System of a Down in 2005. Those were far more frenetic days. Thanks in no small part to Timberlake, 2013 shall be remembered as exceptionally smooth and positively "grown-ass."2 to 10: Okay, but let's skip ahead for a second because SPIN's current cover stars Haim debuted at No. 6!

  • Claire 'Broken Promise Land' Giorgio Moroder Remix Stream

Giorgio Moroder Sings on Remix of Claire's Disco Throbber 'Broken Promise Land'

Of all of the developments to accompany Daft Punk's disco-revitalizing return, the second coming of Giorgio Moroder has got to be the greatest. The legendary producer has delivered Donna Summer-rich DJ sets, shared openly from his incredible archive via SoundCloud, charmingly discussed his mustache with RBMA, and — best of all — sat down with SPIN for an in-depth look at his career. Now the man turns his expert hand to the business of remixing, and rather than safely take on a Top 40 artist, he's chosen up-and-coming Munich quintet Claire. It only takes one listen to the band's "Broken Promise Land," which hails from the currently streaming EP of the same name, to understand what Moroder saw in the song. The track's core owes to Italo-disco, while the soaring heights and the power of Josie Claire Bürkle's voice speak for themselves.

  • Kanye West Jimmy Kimmel Live Guest Wednesday

Kanye West Bringing Beef to 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'

Kanye West will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, October 9, according to ABC. No further details were offered, so it's unclear whether or not the Yeezus MC will perform. That said, while the announcement is out-of-the-blue, there is certainly some precedent that must be addressed. On Thursday, September 26, Kimmel aired a seemingly innocuous sketch spoofing West's very intense in-depth interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe. The segment then prompted a furious Twitter tirade (since redacted) from Ye, followed by what appears to have been the angriest phone-call of all time (from West to Kimmel), and a second run at the host via Twitter, this time using someone else's words.

  • Phil Chevron Pogues Dead Guitarist Punk Cancer Illness

Phil Chevron, Pogues Guitarist, Dead at 56

Philip Chevron, legendary guitarist for the Pogues, is dead at 56 following an extended battle with esophageal cancer. The news was delivered via the band website, in which it was noted that the man passed away peacefully this morning. Tributes to his legacy are being made in a memorial thread within the folk-punk group's online forum. Fittingly, the man born Philip Ryan was a frequent visitor to such sites over the years, becoming a public spokesman of sorts for the band whose frontman, Shane MacGowan, is notoriously cagey. The Pogues were scheduled to perform their 1985 classic Rum, Sodomy & the Lash in its entirety at four U.K. shows in December. Though Chevron wasn't a founding member of the group, he joined in time to record that album, and even earned a production credit alongside Elvis Costello, who helmed the entire thing.

  • J Mascis Sharon Van Etten John Denver Prisoners Video

See Jon Wurster and Aimee Mann Play John Denver Look-Alikes

Back in April, ATO Records shared the star-studded album The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver along with My Morning Jacket's cover of "Leaving on a Jet Plane." We also heard alt-rock great J Mascis and haunting folky Sharon Van Etten come together on "Prisoners," and it's that track that now delivers the video above, complete with a couple of more stars for good measure. That beautifully gnarled version gets a whimsical visual treatment courtesy of Funny or Die and director Scott Jacobson (Dinosaur Jr., Nick Catchdubs, M. Ward).Therein we meet two John Denver devotees who are unhappy working for the man. Played by Superchunk's Jon Wurster and singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, the two nearly cross paths on a dating site for their nature-loving ilk, but then literally do so out in the actual woods.

  • Questlove Soul Train Book Order Amazon Gladys Knight

Here's ?uestlove's 'Soul Train' Book, With a Preface by Nick Cannon

Over the summer, SPIN spoke to Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson about his still-fresh memoir, Mo' Meta Blues. A mere season later and the (then) first-time author has already got a second book on deck — Soul Train: The Music, Dance and Style of a Generation, out October 22 and available for pre-order on Amazon now via Harper Design. We shouldn't be too surprised, however."I've spent every free second of my life listening to music, watching Soul Train, creating music, and reading books about music," Questo told us in June. "That's what I did with my life. Maybe I had a moment of regret [one] night at dinner when [the guests and I] said good night and I was like 'Whoa, I need friends.' I'm looking at their phone numbers and I'm like, should I call them again?"He could have, but we're thankful he apparently started typing instead.

  • Ron Howard Eddie Vedder Made in America Video Interview

Eddie Vedder Takes on American Issues in 'Made in America' Trailer

When you're Jay Z, it's no trouble to put together a music festival bill featuring everyone from Pearl Jam to Kanye West to Skrillex to Run-D.M.C., as was the case with 2012's inaugural Made in America. And when you're director Ron Howard, hired by Jay Z to document said fest, it's no trouble nab a little intimate interview time with the aforementioned artists. We already saw everyone's favorite Arrested Development narrator get schooled in dubstep by Sonny Moore. Now, in the Wall Street Journal premiere posted below, we get Eddie Vedder putting the plight of our nation into terms that intersect quite nicely with the title of Pearl Jam's new album, Lightning Bolt."There are so many issue to talk about. And it's so detailed, and so complex, that it almost shuts you down," Vedder begins.

  • Eminem Channels '8 Mile' in Gritty 'Survival' Video

Eminem Channels '8 Mile' in Gritty 'Survival' Video

Now that the chatter over Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse has died down, Eminem's also gauntlet-tossing rapping-ass single "Survival" has a chance to shine. We initially got a preview of the track via the trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts, but now the song gets its own video. The warfare theme extends into the gritty visual above, with footage of the game projected onto abandoned-looking buildings likely in Em's native Detroit. We also find Marshall Mathers dressed in urban camouflage, on a midnight graffiti run that takes him through alleys and across rooftops. The dark tone of the video recalls scenes from 8 Mile, and the mike-denting verses don't hurt: "I'm not a rapper, I'm an adapter/ I can adjust, plus I can just walk up to a mike and just bust." Marshall Mathers LP 2 is out November 5 and, duh, is one of SPIN's 50 Fall Albums You've Gotta Hear.

  • Kurt Vile Sore Eros 'Serum' Stream 'Jamaica Plain'

Kurt Vile and Sore Eros Stretch Out on Heady 'Serum'

Former SPIN cover star Kurt Vile has been feeling nostalgic of late. He and Matador Records are set to release a deluxe edition of his officially Essential Wakin on a Pretty Daze LP (including an extra EP's worth of B-sides and versions) on November 19. And before that, the Care in the Community imprint will resurrect a trio of early-aughts collaborations with Robert Robinson. As Sore Eros, the former member of Vile's band the Violators co-helms the Jamaica Plains EP, which will arrive as a transparent 10-inch on November 5. Now we can hear a sample of that set, "Serum," a lazily drifting psych-folk piece with lyrics dolled out bit by bit in Vile's creakiest drawl. The Violators hit the road this month. Find those tour dates here.

  • Tyler, the Creator,

In Defense of Tyler, the Creator's Bear-Poking 'Tamale' Video

Tyler, the Creator's latest video opens with a single-frame decoder ring: a photo of a tamale with the price $3.91. The Odd Future leader was born in March of 1991, so one might assume that he is, in fact, that titular Mesoamerican delight where this clip is concerned. Oh, and there's the part above that which reads "A visual interpretation of Tyler's mind."If you found the man's Wolf tough to swallow, the video may help. Under his Wolf Haley director's guise, the Creator has a knack for exposing just how blown out his lyrics are meant to be, whether deeply puerile or naively deep. The clip for "Tamale" also tacks on a clutch bit of "Answer," illustrating both sides of the "controversial" Los Angeles MC's brain.Oh, and there's a Pharrell cameo that our host is very excited about.
