TV on the Radio Deliver Taut Tour Opener in Philly

"That was a world premiere, by the way," TV on the Radio multi-instrumentalist Jaleel Bunton said to rapturous applause at Philadelphia's Electric Factory after playing the slow-chugging, powerful "Caffeinated Consciousness," a cut from their fourth album, Nine Types of Light (out tomorrow),"That's the first time we've ever played that song live." "We've never even rehearsed it before," added lead singer Tunde Adebimpe. It was four songs into TV on the Radio's rapturous, kinetic tour opener -- "Young Liars," "The Wrong Way," and the aural cocaine of "Dancing Choose" opened it -- and if they'd never rehearsed, you'd never know it.

Fiery Furnaces Play New Songs In Philly

Brooklyn brother/sister indie-rockers the Fiery Furnaces opened a quick four-city jaunt with a stripped down, playful 90-minute set in Philadelphia that featured whiskey shots with the crowd and "the most talking we've ever done between songs," according to the band's multi-instrumental wunderkind Matthew Friedberger. "We're just stalling," he later admitted. "We're tired because we haven't played in so long." Tired or not, the band managed to debut their new album, I'm Going Away (out July 21), from top to bottom for a wildly enthusistic crowd at tiny Kung Fu Necktie (capacity: 100). The new tunes, like most in the Furnaces repertoire, were sprawled heartily across an inventive aural landscape: frequent, abrupt chord changes; newly-reinvented time signatures from drummer Bob D'amico; oodles and oodles of odd lyrics from vocalist Eleanor Friedberger.

Antony and the Johnsons Kick Off U.S. Tour

Antony and the Johnsons opened their 15-date U.S. tour Monday night at Glenside, PA's Keswick Theater, just outside Philadelphia, with a 90-minute set that featured songs from each of the band's albums, a stunning cover of Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love," and eight of the eleven cuts from their latest record, The Crying Light. Antony and the Johnsons are all about frontman Antony Hegarty's otherworldly vocals and the offbeat passion of his songs.
