Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala Started Another Band

Zavalaz Cedric Bixler Zavala Mars Volta

Former Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala has formally launched his new band, Zavalaz. His previous project famously imploded in January when guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López announced his new endeavor Bosnian Rainbows. But Bixler-Zavala let Volta fans know he felt they “deserved more,” and now he’ll have a chance to deliver.

In speaking to to SPIN last month, the At the Drive-In founder explained, “I’ve been working on my own record for a while now … because being in the Mars Volta wasn’t exactly the most nurturing moment to discover that I could write songs … They’re mostly songs that I was writing for my wife, lots of acoustic-driven stuff, lots of lap steel, a lot of Sunday morning stuff.”

According to the Facebook page for the new band, Zavalaz will feature Bixler-Zavala on vocals and guitar, Dan Elkin on guitar and vocals, Greg Rogove of Megapuss on drums and vocals, and the Mars Volta’s Juan Alderete de la Peña on bass and vocals. Under “Genre” they’ve written “AM Gold,” and included what appear to be lyrics in the “About” section: “SHOOT MY POISON ARROW INTO THE BLINDING DARKNESS SHOOT MY POISON ARROW, AND LET LOVE COME WALTZING IN.”

If that’s not elucidating enough, Bixler-Zavala shared the following on Twitter:
