Yo La Tengo Meld ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Roger Rabbit’ for Animated ‘Ohm’ Video

yo la tengo, ohm

Earlier this year, Yo La Tengo released a tree-loving time-lapse video for “Ohm,” the nearly seven-minute opening track off this year’s slightly slept-on Fade. Now the Hoboken heroes have dropped another clip for the fuzzy single, one that cleaves the song’s running time in half. The above cartoon clip, written and directed by Donick Carey (who has also written for New Girl, The Simpsons, and Late Show With David Letterman) with animation by Sugarshack Animation, finds a classroom of students trying to answer one of life’s great existential questions: “What is Yo La Tengo?” Frontman Ira Kaplan might say they’re a band whose career path isn’t the best blueprint for fast-track success. But this colorful video prefers to show rather than tell, employing trippy visuals and a cigar-smoking baby that feels lifted from Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Later this month, YLT will release “Ohm” as a limited-edition triple 12-inch vinyl that features three different versions of the track (an album version, a loud live version, and a quiet live version) and comes with “a 4-box poly shower curtain display case” that can be hung on a wall, or, if you’d prefer, in the shower. Pre-orders of this special package are currently available through Matador Records
