Yo Gotti

Who? Born Mario Mims, Memphis-bred rapper Yo Gotti — who borrows his moniker from legendary Mafioso John Gotti — just dropped Back 2 Da Basics, his second album.

What’s the Deal? Yo Gotti’s TVT debut, Life didn’t move copies like the label anticipated, but with Dirty South rap gaining steam over the past year, Gotti and his hardcore street sound are getting a second chance. The gritty “Full Time,” featured in last year’s acclaimed film, Hustle & Flow, flows thick like molasses with heavy beats and rhymes about the life of a hustler. “Gangsta Party” (featuring 8Ball & MJG and Bun B) stands out with a Marvin Gaye sample.

Fun Facts: Yo Gotti grew up in North Memphis’ crime-ridden Ridge Crest Apartments and had to hustle even as a kid, which is why Back 2 Da Basics is all about pimping, hustling, and being smarter than the street.
