The xx Announce First Album in Three Years, ‘Coexist’

Two weeks after premiering a handful of new tunes at their recent London shows, the xx have announced the follow-up to their 2009 self-titled debut. The record, which was announced unofficially in December, will be called Coexist. We presume the title has nothing to do with living in the shadow of all the side-project work Jamie xx has been churning out since the band paused touring back in 2010.

“After a long time on the road, we took a break, created our own studio, and wrote these new songs that we’re so looking forward to playing to you,” the band wrote in a Facebook post. “We will be touring throughout the summer and beyond, and hope to play somewhere near you soon.” The album, Jamie has said in interviews, will be far more extroverted than the trio’s intimate debut: “Club music has definitely had an influence,” he says.

Coexist drops September 11 Stateside (September 10 in their native U.K.).
