The four years since this unofficial presidential candidate’s last major-label studio album haven’t done much to diminish Wyclef’s appetite for stylistic gumbo: On this sequel of sorts to his solo debut, the former Fugee throws hip-hop, reggae, synth pop, and heavy metal — not to mention guest spots from Serj Tankian, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, and Akon — into his trademark melting pot with little worry that the results might not blend. The fact that they don’t seems to be Clef’s point on an album about the tension between assimilation and self-preservation.
