Supreme Cuts and Polica ‘Envision’ Hard-Hustling Electronic R&B

Supreme Cuts divine ecstasy envision channy

Chicago’s Supreme Cuts production team initially got our attention by dipping their town’s frenetic footwork music in purped-out goop and slathering the results in darkly burbling synthery. That approach made Mike Perry and Austin Kjeultes the perfect pair to accompany evil rhymework of Haleek Maul as they continued to push their own sound to its outer limits via last year’s Whispers in the Dark long-player. Now the Herbie Hancock-loving beatmakers are plotting their next evolution via Divine Ecstasy, an October 1 album for Dovecote that will feature Maul, Portland R&B outsider Shy Girls, French singer Mahaut Mondino, and — as can be heard below — Channy Leaneagh of Poliça. Most recently heard on her own group’s Justin Vernon-assisted “Tiff,” the Minneapolis vocalist makes a strong showing on “Envision,” a soul-damaged slice of hard-hustling house mixed with dance-tent melodic thrusts and fast-acting percussion.

Though the new set’s track list remains elusive, Supreme Cuts may be coming to a town near you soon. Dates beneath the jam.
