As the bassist for New York rockers the Strokes, Nikolai Fraiture appears to be the strong, silent type, standing solemnly behind his bandmates as he lays down deep-toned riffs. But for his solo project, Nickel Eye (a variation on his given name), Fraiture strapped on a six-string guitar and stepped up to the mic.

Next February, New York quintet the Strokes will push aside their respective solo projects and reunite to begin writing songs for their first new record since 2006's ambitious First Impressions of Earth.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner plays on the debut album from Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture's aptly titled new project, Nickel Eye. (Say it aloud: "Nik-o-lie!). And it seems the collaboration stems from Zinner's love of poker... and bars.

By all published accounts, the Strokes haven't even begun to work on their fourth album, but devout fans are offered one hell of a conciliation prize: Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo material. And "GfC," a tune off his forthcoming sophomore set ¿Cómo Te Llama?, out July 8, will certainly ease the potentially long wait.
